Tricks for recognizing overlay
    #1723379 - 07/17/03 12:40 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Are there any good tricks for recognizing overlay on a casing, versus just lots of mycelium clumping toghther?

sometimes you'll get cauliflower-like growths or other large lumps of mycelia when humidity is too high. Overlay is tough, hard almost leathery like instead of light delicate mycelia. It may tend to yellow or bruise more as well. A well done casing shouldn't have mycelia on top of the casing layer, it should look like mushrooms coming up through dirt.

no a well done casing layer you will see white and rhizomorphic growth through out the casing layer here is a good looking casing layer if you see nothing but your casing layer then it is not ready to fruit

While overlay can be described in a number of ways, I generally think of it as being a concern if I'm seeing any sort of linear growth across the surface of the casing layer. In the very least that shows that the casing layer was not applied evenly across the substrate.
