Extended some stuff in the pinning section, and added your shot k00laid.
Also while looking through one of my albums stumbled across this old pic, a great candidate for "what it shouldn't look like" This appears to be damage caused by dry air, but it's the opposite. Before I fully calibrated a humidifier I took the risk and left for the weekend, it soaked them for a day and a half straight, water logged them all causing this damage. Pretty rare to see what over saturation actually looks like.

Wow those are some really aborted cakes Mattsls, can you describe to us how much you were misting and fanning? Was your SGFC properly construted and what lighting were you using. They appear to be lacking light and FAE both.

Excellent information, we can use this to confirm that you were definitely over misting. Since they were tall and skinny (reaching) they were not given sufficient lighting. Tall and skinny can be caused by lack of FAE as well, but will be accompanied by fuzzy feet, which I do not see.
So now we can properly label these pictures in the "what it shouldn't look like" section. Over misted, and insufficient lighting. Aborted, and bacterial contamination.

This appears to be a bacterial contamination, and since it appears to be directly at the inoculation points of the jar, you can assume your syringe was contaminated.
You need to stop misting so often, BEFORE you attempt to mist a cake it should be completely dry, no water sitting on it. You want to water to evaporate off the cake completely before misting again, not only is this a main pinning trigger but it will prevent aborting pins.
Also it helps to have an oscilating fan in the same room as your SGFC to keep the air moving. Move the chamber closer to a window for better lighting, or get a 6500k florescent bulb for $10 from walmart, and place it on a 12hr on 12hr off timer ($2.88 at walmart for timer)
Also your holes looks like they are spaced to far apart. Should be every 2 inches.
other than that those are some gorgeous pin sets on those cakes, don't let them abort.

For fruiting, temps as low as 65F are acceptable, but optimal would be 76F+ (I've seen cubensis fruit outdoors in 110F, happily)

Weird smells are almost always bacterial contamination.

Maybe I'm a mycology nerd, but pics like these blow my fucking socks off. Donated by Amanita Virosa :

I'll add some descriptions on the OP, but basically they are bacterial contam on agar, beautiful Penecillium contam on agar, Aspergillus contam jar next to clean jar. Last one is a little tricky but it was a mistaken contam, thought to be yeast buds, but turned out to be simply water droplets.

Beautiful Hoobatech, I've seen that orange bacterial contam before, not sure what it is, but it's ugly. Interestingly enough E.coli is an orange bacteria. That's scary.

i had a few bags of rye that didnt get properly sterilized, needless to say they got pitched, however i thought id throw a grain on agar too see what the culprit was. there was no discoloration present, just that nasty apple/fermented/bacteria scent and excess moisture in the bottom of the bag
