Wal-Mart workers plan Black Friday walkout

Any members work there? Any full time with benefits? Anyone taking off Next Friday? Quote:
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- A group of Wal-Mart workers are planning to stage a walkout next week on Black Friday, arguably the biggest holiday shopping day for the world's largest retail store.
The walkout builds on an October strike that started at a Wal-Mart (WMT, Fortune 500) in Los Angeles and spread to stores in 12 other cities. More than 100 workers joined in the October actions... The union-backed groups OUR Walmart and Making Change at Wal-Mart, and a watchdog group Corporate Action Network, are calling on the nation's largest employer to end what they call retaliation against employees who speak out for better pay, fair schedules and affordable health care...

Thank god. Black Friday is a disgusting circus of American greed and selfishness at it's absolute worst. Shut it down!

I worked at Target for a few years and got to experience first hand the way in which people turn into absolute MONSTERS on this day to get what they want. I saw a poor old woman basically get pinned against a wall so that some douche bags could shuffle through what little walkable space there was and get their hands on a stupid TV. Sickening.

I work at a craft store and am already feeling the Christmas spirit. Stuck up bitches that are entitled to everything.
Also can't understand why we're only open half the day on thanksgiving. Not open to early afternoon mind you, which would allow us to have time with families. No, we're only open from 4pm til 11, the main time of day where one might want to relax and be thankful for whatever.
Guess who gets to go back in 8 hours later to deal with more stupid bitches at 7am?

wal-mart is not union, so if I were a CEO I wouldn't worry about some strike on Black Friday. If they strike I'd terminate there ungrateful butts. Don't apply for the job next time chump. Just in case I'd employ more store cashiers/stockers on Black Friday.

Mentally ill folks you say?
I'll take their job. I applied for Wal Mart before I decided to move, and they said "Sorry, we aren't hiring right now for cashiers."
I'll wait for black friday. Your jobs are mine bitches! Go ahead and walk out! GO!

I don't know if this is sarcasm or not... (Damn you internet!)
But in my area, I'd love to work at wal mart. For real. New York minimum wage is 7.25 an hour. The Wal Mart in my area, and the one I'm moving to starts at 9$ an hour.
My wife has been a supervisor for 2 years at her (Now old) job, and only made 8.25$ an hour.
Part time here is about 30 hours. (Which is 940$ after taxes)
Rent for a 2 bedroom (a nice one) is about 600$ if we both made 940$ that's 1880$ a month. In this part of New York, we'd be living very nicely.
(that's actually more than we bring home now, and we are still doing alright.)

I remember reading somewhere that bill gates sighted McDonald's as the best job opportunity for uneducated americans due to the intense turn over and opportunities they provide its not hard to conceive becoming a manager within a few years if your willing to move.
Walmart isn't a bad place to work where the recession hit hard, because there all corporate so they can loose money at a few stores for a while, while all competition shuts there doors.
any job is better than no job.

I remember a few years ago I was riding the bus up to portland on black friday, it was like the fucking apocalypse out there, car wrecks, a huge local bar we drove past was in flames, then I get on my radio and hear about how a walmart employee was trampled to death while TRYING to unlock the doors. People are fucking nuts lol. I'll probably get a tv or something but some of these people don't realize a lot of these places will give you the same discount if you call the day before and have them slap your name on one, drive up the next day through the chaos, skip the lines, pick it up, leave.

In my part 600$ is a studio apartment IF you know the person and to say that situation for one person would be great is a huge overstatement IMO why you spend more then half of your day trying to pay rent amoung all other things.

i worked at walmart last black friday. all i did was stand around and "guard"(let people grab items before they were supposed to be for sale) a section of waffle makers until the crowd died down and then tried to sell as many wii's and spyro games as i could while a coworker and i were printing out price tags for like 9 million dollars and placing them on items that were like a dollar. i had to work a 12 hour shift but it was actually pretty fun. i roasted like 2 80's before i went in that night too so that might be why it was fun but the employees walking out are just a bunch of lazy pussies.

The ones that are sticking around are stupid cunts willing to roll over for a dollar. Wal-mart treats the greater majority of its employees like absolute shit, looking to Asia's nearly non existent labour laws for inspiration. Their a shit company, and these people staging a strike are doing the right thing.

i liked working at walmart. it's really not bad at all and the employees have it pretty good compared to a lot of places. It's the best job i've had so far at least. the only thing that sucks is you can't miss more than 7 days in a 6 month period but there were people who had missed like 20 and the managers let it slide.

I'm not sure whats more American: Black Friday, or workers striking because having a job isn't good enough for them.

Striking doesn't sound american at all. I thought american workers lied down and took it, reasoning that it's Super Constitutional for their employer to have the freedom to rape them, and that working is a Love it or Leave it kinda thing. And that if you don't agree you're a commie fascist. It's the europeans (i.e French) that go on strike whenever their boss eats a slice of cake and doesn't share it with the rest of the class.

I used to work at walmart. It wasnt bad. I was broke but its an easy job. I was shocked at how many people complained. All i heard all day was bitching and moaning. Id be doing twice the work in your face n they just dicked off and complain about it. I ended up being the managers bitch cuz i was thw olny one to put in quality work on time and not bitch the whole time. You no what happened? I basically had to pick up everyones slack and still got passed up for any promotion. They lit gave the easy jobs to the lazy slacker ppl. Left me busting my ass on the floor prob cuz i did work and asshole #127 would be better suited sitting behind a desk scanning bs. I didn't care about the work i wanted the raise!! The managers are retarded I'm shocked they graduated high school. Everyday i felt like i was working with a bunch of monkeys or 8th graders or sumthing. They cut my hours blah blah. I basically was working just to pay my rent and food worst of all i see walmart as one of the most evil corps ever raping all of us for profit. So i was playing a hand in that for fuck all nothing at the end of the week. I quit and they didn't even care because some monkey brained idiot would be there to fill my place next week.
So really this walkout comes as no surprise to me. One of my boys still works there and has to work b friday and thanksgiving. He doesnt have a family anymore so he doesnt care but says hes getting like double time and gets 20% off everything including sale items and food so ill be there to help him buy stuff he normally can't afford and cant buy himself cuz he has to work that night

I dont work there and I really dont care what they do or do not do but Im not going to pretend that its realistic for everyone to start their own fucking business. Many people just dont have what it takes upstairs so they take the jobs they can. That should not suggest they should be allowed to be shit on by a giant corporation just because it can do so.

Is it alright with you if a small sole proprietorship shits on them?

Care to elaborate on how exactly you started a business working minimum wage 100% on your own? Cuz I havent seen anyone live anything other then a hand-to-mouth existence.

Probably because most people, or at least people who will be out shopping, are done in the late afternoon/early evening. Thanksgiving "dinner" for my family and the two other families I've had it with were always more of a lunch.

I didn't work minimum wage for long. I learned my trade and made more than that as an employee. I had my own company at 28. The capital investment was in tools which I had acquired over time. It probably cost me less than $2,000 to go out on my own.

Construction. Specifically carpentry which became general contracting and management. Do you know what is sad? I'm usually the only English speaking person on a jobsite. Americans are abandoning the construction trades.

Out of curiosity, could you give a rough breakdown of the tools that you spent that initial $2000 on?

I did both at the same time. I could have gone to grad school, I had profs asking me my plans. I had had more than enough of school.

The CEO of Walmart Michael Duke makes more in an hour, than his employees make in an entire year.
Michael Duke's $35 million salary, when converted to an hourly wage, worked out to $16,826.92. By comparison, at a Walmart store planned for the Windy City's Pullman neighborhood, new employees to be paid $8.75 an hour would gross $13,650 a year.

He prob acquired all the stuff he needed (general carpentry tools) just working for other people(skills included). Hell I'm slowly amassing a arsenal of tools myself I consider the cost to be partly business partly pleasure. But bet one day you were like "why the fuck am i working for this guy I can do it all myself." Bam Zappaisgod Construction llc was founded

No, there never was an epiphany. It was planned. The timing was flexible but the destination was not. I would also point out that as I acquired and used more tools I was paid more by the people I worked for.

I see, but I was wondering more what tools you started out with.
I mostly had already acquired this stuff over 4-5 years:
Truck, some ladders, pump jacks, roof brackets, circular saw, table saw, primitive electric chop saw, drill (cordless did not exist). A bunch of manual hand tools.
The start up cost was pretty much all overhead/administrative.
