which is the best combo or is one better straight for spawning cakes. Don't quite understand the benefits of each. Thanks

IMO the poo/straw mixture. Just straw if your begining with bulk spawn. The benefit is more nutrients, alot more, and youll get many more, bigger, potent mushrooms.

you mean just straight straw for beginners? Where is the potency from the straw or dung? What about size, I thought poo was where the size was from.

Straw is less prone to contamination than poo. Potency depends on how they were grown i.e. growing medium/water content/substrate depth and so on. Straw has more nutrients than an ordinary PF cake, but poo has more than straw, but is more easily contaminated. But if you can manage both, they make a great combination.

okay because in one grow I saw them mix the spawn in with just straight poo and mix it up and other said layer between straw and poo just flat. and they are just fruited in perlite chambers same as casings right?

There are many different ways to grow, and many different ratios, I was just giving a basic number. And yes, they can be fruited in a normal perlite chamber.

because it seemed like the act of mixing as opposed to layering would create more innoculation points.

because it's true.
straw contaminates much easier than poo. i'd say use straight poo or a mix of both... not many people use compost, but i've heard it can be better than poo. i think it depends on the compost.

My friend would have to disagree. He has grown on both and prefers a combination of the two, but either can be used successfully with basic cleanliness procedures.

You dont say? Ive encountered many more problems with poo than with straw. Friends of friends would also agree. But your friends of friends would disagree. Could be due to different sterilization procedures, growing techniques. Ide bet its different for different people. However it couldnt hurt to hear some more input.

how is compressing it superior to mixingthe spawn up with it. Or is each layer kept seperate for a reason or is it just growing style?

the picture above are from a 50/50 mixture mixed very well it was spawned in layers about 1" layer poo/straw then good layer spawn mixed up. then another 1" layer poo/straw then spawn and so on till desired depth not like 3"straw then 3" of poo over that . i like to compress it very tight so it colonizes very fast with good heat build up
