Heimia salicifolia losing leaves - Help!
    #17152567 - 11/03/12 10:05 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I germinated a heimia salicifolia plant earlier this year and now it is about 8" tall with 4 main branches. It has been getting cold out so I brought it into the hallway inside about a week ago. Since then it has started to lose a bunch of leaves.

I got a 400 watt light/tent for all the cacti for the winter and put the little bush in there today. Will this stop the leaves from falling off? Does this plant normally lose leaves in winter or is my plant dying?

I overwintered mine in zone 6 in an unheated greenhouse and I didn't water at all. Lost lots of leaves. Grew back the next spring.

I was hesitant, but eventually allowed my plant to be overwintered outside. A short, hard freeze (zone 9) will kill it down to the roots, but mine has recuperated. Ways to work around this are to mulch deeply, or keep it next to a warmer part of your house, but I would consider very rough weather a risk. Getting all these things into the house, nicely, then outdoors in 5-6 months, has been part of my yearly routine.
