Got myself a gun! * 1
    #13892681 - 02/02/11 09:10 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So, I recently had a relative pass away. The family was splitting up his possessions, and since nobody wanted his old hunting rifle, I took it.

Its a lever-action rifle made by Winchester, and thats about all I know about the gun. Its pretty old, and MOST of the engraving and stuff is gone. The "crosshatch" pattern on the hammer is completely worn off. There is no visible serial number (does that make my weapon illegal?) and it took quite a bit of squinting to be able to read that it does, indeed say "Winchester" on the gun.

My problem is...I really can't figure out what caliber bullets the gun takes  Like I mentioned in my previous thread, I'm a gun noob. I've only ever fired a handful of guns and never owned my own gun.

With no visible serial number available, what would I have to do to find out information about my gun? I can post pictures if any of you could help identify it, just let me know what exactly you'd like to be photographed. I can put something like a lighter near the barrel for size comparison if that would help?

Thanks, let me know, and I'll follow up with some pictures! :]

Well, it has been used quite a bit by the looks of it. So, I assume it was for hunting . I'll get pics and post 'em up in a few. I'll just take a bunch of all the parts and you guys tell me what you think it is.

Edit: Here -

Best I could do, sorry

take it to a pawn shop/gun store, they have a buncha ammo behind the counter and will be able to help you figure out what caliber it is. I'm familiar with million year old obscure caliber weapons.

It should clearly be engraved on the barrel what the caliber is.

I'm pretty sure this is an "antique", so I'm doubting it follows todays standards.

Antique Winchesters can be worth big money depending on model, condition, etc. The one I have pictured is worth around $6000! There should be a caliber marking on the barrel and model year/number near or under the lever. Don't clean or try to restore the rifle until you know exactly what you have. Improper cleaning/restoration can destroy the value of a gun. A professional restoration will make a gun look like new when finished but the value will be reduced by half on average. Collectors want original condition no matter how bad it may look. I'll take some pics of my 1886 and post them. It may help you find the numbers you are looking for.

Couldn't add this pic to the other post. The date and model number location under the lever....

I know for a fact that if your Winchester is a black powder you cant just go down to the store and buy the ammo you will have to load the rounds yourself or find a guy that can pack ammo for you. You shouldn't go to a pawn shop in my opinion your better off finding a antique weapons expert that specializes in black powder. An antique dealer might no one or you can join a form for black powder rifles and pistols online and find a guy near you or ask around for advice. Weapons that are black powder by model or caliber are considered antique there for there not considered fire arms. Shooting the wrong caliber in you rifle could damage the gun or blow up the gun in extreme cases. Hurting you or people around you. The picture you took with the engravings on the barel will say the caliber and the year and model. Any thing made pre 1989 i think it's 1989 is considered black powder. My dad knows tons of shit about them there the only type of thing he can shoot since he's been to prison. You should google the date's and every thing so you don't ruin it. Thats in good condition you can easily make 1 grand off it in my opinion. Well any where from 500-100 and up is what i would say. I'm not sure about Winchesters i like smith and wesson.

I can't believe not a single member could answer this mans question. It's most likely a 30-30. It should say somewhere on the gun, most likely on the barrel. I know this thread is two years old but DAMN.

I thought so as well but the caliber is clearly marked on the rifle. It's older than I thought and if I were the OP I'd take the serial numbers off the web for sure. Someone has been in that rifle at one time. You can tell by the deformity in the screw that it was tightened past spec because the screwdriver mark is there. Then again, it could have been the wrong size screwdriver that deformed the screw head.

30/30 is what I was thinking too. Manufactures almost always stamp the caliber onto the barrel or receiver. If not take it to a gunstore and talk to them. Those older rifles are made so well it probably shoots great. I have several, I would never sell them!!

My guess would be that the rifle is a Winchester model 94. They are very distinct in the way in which the "innards" drop down with the lever when the action is open, and I can clearly see that in the pic you posted. Cool rifle, man, I would love an old model 94. I have a modern Marlin 336, which is a similar rifle.

Here's a good informational video on the 94:
