this world does not suck.
    #1720895 - 07/16/03 09:48 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

for almost as long as people have been around, they've had rulers who did things they didn't like, started wars for empire, oppressed people, and other nastiness. back in the time, the king could do whatever he wanted... start a war just cause he felt like it, have his way with some girls in a village... all the people he was tight with became lords, and they could own you, basically. for most of history, it has been the norm for governments to be extremely, extremely oppressive...

for most of history, infant mortality has been high, literacy low. winters have been cold, people have been starving, dying from disease, and working hard days their entire lives. and there hasn't been toilet paper.

what we have now has it's problems, yes, but we've got it better than almost every generation of human beings to come before us.

i'm not happy about the drug war, welfare, and gun laws... i'm sure everyone's got a problem with the system, but it's really a very good system. there's room for improvement, sure, but really people... it's not that bad.

so much bitching goes on... you know, i'm all for improvement. fixing problems. solutions. endless bitching doesn't solve anything though. if you see a problem and think something could be done better, say so, and do something about it. this forum is called, "politics, activism, and law"... not "come here and complain about shit when you've got no solution to the problem, even though you've got it 10 times better than almost every human being to come before you".

and it's just politics. i've seen quite a few posts where someone just come's out and says, "this world sucks", or something to that effect. this world sucks? come on now... go for a walk or something. the world is beaufiful, and getting all bent out of shape for things that are really not that important in the grand scheme of things is a waste.

millions of people have been taken as slaves. millions put in concentration camps and labor camps. millions executed by their government.... and we've got people here bitching and complaining and saying "the world sucks" because they might get arrested for smoking a joint. it's not so bad folks. let's improve it if we can, but less bitching please !

cheer up!

that is all.

It?s much easier to point out things that need to be changed than to figure out how exactly to change them. The problem I have with a lot of right-wingers(tho this is also true of some lefties as well) is that they seem to think they have the answer to everything, and therefore there?s no reason to give any credence to other people?s ideas.

I think this comic strip sums it up nicely:

see, i hope i didn't come off like, "stop this bitching, i'm tired of hearing it!"... that's not what i meant... i meant more of a "for your sake people, chill the fuck out. cheer up. the world is a great place. let's fix its problems if we can, but don't get pissed off about the weather. if you think the world sucks, put down that newspaper and go watch the sunset or look at stars or something".

Nice post.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for that my dear friend is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it. ~ Adrian Rogers

This country could use a bit less bitching and a bit more doing.

Would you consider political protest to be bitching or doing?

a bit of both, unfortunatly the bitchers outweigh the doers. When the protestors are being represented by a guy/girl throwing a chair through a window the protestors are looked at as just plain bitchers.

Its not so much living in our society that make me bitch its the effect we have on those living outside of it which annoys me most. And as for activism I think expending as much peaceful energy from myself in my day to day dealing is the best form of activism I can come up with right now. oh and plenty of bitchin too!

PEACE

As long as we are separated from God, the world will continue to suck.

too bad everyone has a different idea of what God is...

Are you saying a predominantly atheist society like Europe necessarily sucks?

"Are you saying a predominantly atheist society like Europe necessarily sucks? "

what people believe about the concept that western society has come to call "God" has nothing to do with how close they are to him.

the question isn't "do they believe in god" as much as it is "are they godly people"  or as Lao Tzu would say, "are they close to the tao?"

but anyway, this is getting to be a spirituality & philosophy discussion.  sorry, I have a tendancy to turn political discussions into philisophical ones

Ok, I got you. People need to agree about what a "godly person" is. True enough.
