Nothing lasts for ever
    #1720796 - 07/16/03 07:06 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

and all good things (Ha! ha!) must come to an end.

So how long do we think the US has left in its position of Global Superpower before the seat of power moves on somewhere else?

Time left for the US as superpower?
1-5 years
5-20 years
20-50 years
50-100 years
Forever

i read this article once about how china is really coming around and is already overshadowing the US in many 'superpower' qualities and will soon come to replace it as the superpower in the world. it was pretty compelling.

I figured that was yours.

While I'm not naive enough to think the united states will last forever it will be a superpower for a very long time. Many countries depend on the strength of the United States economy so those who wish for it's collapse are cutting off their nose to spite their face. I won't give an exact date but it will be a long time if ever. My hope is that we won't need to be a superpower and other countries come up to our level (economically). But that must be a foreign concept to many here.

I didn't vote because there's a big gap between 100 and forever.

Nothing will last that long. Look at how long the Greeks, Romans, Europeans, Brits lasted as the centre of power. Each one lasted shorter than the one before. I think the US soon wont be able to compete with the east in the tech market and suddenly the seat of power will move. I personally cant wait!! hee! hee!

The only possible problem i could forsee it that something happens between americas relations with china. China makes most of what is used in america and obviously if that stopped there would be a time of uncertainty. As long America could adjust to becomeing the manufactuar it once was, americas seat of power will last much longer.

Your glee is overshadowing your ignorance. Still bitter about that whole revolution i see. There's only one problem with your comparisons, this country was founded on a totally different philosophical base than the ones that preceded it. It won't last forever (nothing does) but you'll never see it, nor will I.

Your arguement may hold some water if all the preceeding centres of power were based on the same system/philosophy but theyre not. What makes you think the US is going to buck a trend that has been developing over millenia i.e the westward shift of power?

Now obviously just because there is a trend doesnt mean that it will continue but I think once the effects of the changes in the energy markets kick in and the Euro gets stronger and the asian economies start to grow quickly, much quicker than a bloated economy like the US could ever hope to do again, Old Uncle Sam may be in for a bit of a shock. My only worry is that as the power starts to slip away the US start throwing more of their little tantrums. Lets face it even if they lose their economic dominance it will be sometime before their military dominance fades. So all you americans have got to spread the peace virus far and wide asap!

PEACE

Well, what I've gathered from my addiction to the History Channel is that Rome was, for the most part, much more accepting of other races, religions, sexual orientations, and lifestyles. Of course, there probably were some bigots then, just as there are now, but overall, homosexuality was more accepted, race was less of an issue, and most religions were accepted(there were, of course, some religions such as Christianity that were persecuted because they were seen as a threat to the empire).
