Help with WBS
    #1720255 - 07/16/03 03:42 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

Ok I have a problem, I sterilized some bird seed into 6 quart jars and 2 pint jars and innoculated via syringe. The pints colonized and only one quart started so when the pints had fully colonized I broke them up and g2g the 5 jars that hadn't produced and now the one quart that was growing seemed to have stoped. There are no holes in the lids and I didn't soak the wbs before I pc'd them. So I guess my question is will the g2g transfers work? and is there maybe not enough air going through the bs?

You say there were no holes in the lids? Do you mean there were no holes in the lids period or no open holes in the lids (i.e. you shoved polyfil in them)? If no holes at all you probably suffocated the mycelium or something, try hammering a screw driver through the middle of the jar lids and shoving some polyfill through it, maybe the mycelium will start growing again, maybe not...

Did you do g2g tranfers infront of a flow hoof or inside a glove box?Because if not you have a good chance of getting contams.and mycelium don't need any air exchange when incubating them they use very little air.

In my experience WBS is quite susceptible to drying out. And if you didn't soak them before PCing (you should really) moisture will be at a premium.

Signs of drying include slow or stalled colonization. Try another g2g with soaked WBS, and you'll see the difference.

Yea the the quarts had absolutley no holes and I did not soak before I pc'd them. But I put 5 holes on each one today and covered the entrance to the jar with coffee filters and then put the lid on. I soaked two pint jars full of wbs over night and pc'd them today and I will innoculate tommorrow. I use a the oven tek when doing all of this. The reason I think it was the air was because the pints were the only ones with holes and they colonized perfectly. So soaking them should solve them problem? by the way I've noticed this and maybe I was just high j/k =) but do the bs colonize faster than brf? and One more thing I need some input on this I have 3 strains at 5 pints each I planned on doing 4 cake casings and using one to spawn some wbs quarts will this work if I soak the wbs pc and break the cake up for a g2g trasnfer?

First, don't cover with coffee filters because those won't do shit, go get some tyvek. Second, your WBS is too dry, millet won't colonize at all if it's too dry, and if it does it will take forever. Third... the oven TEK has been proven false by numerous experienced shroom growers, you need a real flow hood. Chances are, if the G2g jars haven't gotten contamed, then they are unsuitable to propogate anything in. And yes mycelium does need to breathe, when doing grains it is VERY VERY important to us4e polyfill/tyvek lid filters to facilitate good air exchange, otherwise your jars will colonize slower than anything.

where do I get polyfill, and flow hood's are extremley expensive aren't they a few thousand dollars? Is there an alternative to flow hoods? Is there a safe way of doing my g2g transfers?

Glove box is an alternative to flow hoods. And you can find a decent flow hood for the home hobbyist for a hundred dollars and up
