I love movies and while I prefer to watch them for free at home I think some movies really benefit from the big screen experience, The Dark Knight Rises is the best example I can think of recently but I haven't been to the movies since summer. I think a lot of recent movies have actually been great, sure there are some shitty movies but you usually can know if a movie is going to be shit before you waste your time on it if you do a little research. Expecting the film to feel completely real is kind of silly because even as a kid you knew it was just a movie. That shouldn't make it any less enjoyable.

Die hard sucks though, it's just a money making machine and there are unfortunately a lot of movies like them. I avoid them and I have been extremely satisfied with all the recent movies I've been watching lately. For a while I also thought that all new movies suck and that I would soon be out of good movies to watch. To my surprise, I've been able to pretty much watch a new movie every night and I haven't yet run out of good ones. There are also a lot of new movies coming out that I'd love to see and I think have major potential to be amazing.

Has anyone seen Looper yet? Amazing new movie.

Looper is great, definitely worth a watch. I didn't like watchmen all that much but it has been a while since I've seen it and I think I actually might have fallen asleep and missed a bit of the story. :smilingpuppy:

Most mainstream movies suck but there are a lot of limited release gems and even some of the more popular movies that  seem like they might suck but are actually pretty good if you go into them with an open mind.

I don't think a lot of new movies being bad is that's something that is new, I think a lot of old movies are absolute shit and I think the percentage of good movies has probably always been the same or may have increased with the increased ability to make a movie on your own without needing millions of dollars and a Hollywood studio's support.

movies have been particularly shitty for the past ten years. there have been a few awesome ones but for the most part it's just shit. i'm bewildered as to why this is because there is no shortage of great stories in both novels and comics that are highly adaptable with mass appeal. beyond that, going to the theater has consistently proven to be immensely irrating. if it's not the obnoxious people talking, playing on their phones (you're a fuckin dickwipe if you do this fyi), it's the sound being cranked to cochlea shattering levels. like others have mentioned i'm just much happier watching them at home on my setup. if they would devise a way to where i could see new movies without having to pirate them i would gladly pay a few bucks for it.

Art for the masses generally sucks, it's not exclusive to movies. In fact, anything generated for the masses usually sucks. There's rarely something created that both appeals to vastly different populations of people while still being awesome, because in order to appeal to different populations you have to water everything down. It's no different in music, food, visual art, or any other creative endeavor.
