Surgical Mask for GE filtration

Say afoaf was doing this jar tek http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17085316)
and looked all around the local area for quality tyvek, polyfill, and or SFD's and could find nothing of the sort...
Would these be a viable substitution? The surgical masks claim high filtration efficiency of 99%, however one must wonder if they will keep their filtration efficiency after being pressure cooked?
Searching the forums presented similar topics, nothing that directly answered my question, thanks in advance!

When u cant find it locally, Ebay is your best friend.

Yep, amazon carries polyfill as well for cheap as well...
perhaps the surgical mask will be tried out, to see if the foaf gets results... with polyfill coming in the near future...
One would think that these surgical masks COULD be efficient at holding out contams,
As to what it is made out of, it seems to just be a very microscopic fibrous synthetic material that to the naked eye looks almost identical to the filtration patches seen on mycobags, but thicker and more heavy duty... upon opening the box this stuff looks like it has potential

there's poly fill throughout you're house.
sacrifice an old teddy bear, pillow, padded blanket, old couch/ chair, old padded coat and I'm shure others I'm not thinking of.

TY, but this isn't really a question of "where can one procure item XYZ"
It's more a question of "will this item work for its intended job"
Honestly, it seems to the touch to be a thicker version of a mycobag filter as I said before... looks can always be deceiving though

I wouldn't use those. You want a filter that is at least 99.95% efficient down to .3 micron. Synthetic filter disks are the gold standard. RR

Hey RR. I was reading about PTFE syringe filters. I used to use them for LC's and now I use them for my Tupperware petris, that's beside the point though. Anyway, i just learned that ptfe is simply Teflon. So if one could get their hands on wide enough Teflon tape to cover a jar lid could you use it for GE on a grain jar? Have you ever heard of anyone or have experience with this?
Sorry op for thread jacking

Rip open an old pillow and use the polyfil stuffing lol. Or buy a new pillow and use it. So easy to find polyfil. Walmart sells a huge bag of it for like 3$. I personally like my SFD's.
Also, you wouldn't need as much to cover the whole lid (but, it would be more like a SFD if you did so), you would only need enough to cover the hole you put in the lid, just like polyfil. Or atleast I would think so.
Hell, I've used micropore tape over old polyfil holes before and they worked just fine as well.
Lids can be done so many ways.

I told my buddy to just snag SFD's so he's got some headed to his place for his experiments,
He already sterilized and knocked up his first "agar" culture, not an agar culture at all actually, but rather the BRF + Water tek found in the Agar section of the website... on that jar he used the surgical mask, just to give it a shot for curiosity's sake it very well could be a success, time shall tell...
The mask claims "over 99% efficiency"... so if taking them for their word, there is a good chance it will hold out contams, after all products never false advertise.... right? :P

well... figured this deserved an update...
the FOAF's project worked with the surgical masks for use in the BRF agar substitute. One hit wonder of pure luck? possibly, but they seem to work just fine if you find yourself in a pinch.

Just make sure you shop around when buying them.
Mycosupply charges nearly 50$ for 20 of them and other site charge less than 20. A lesson I learned the hard way.

There is no way that this mask filters out greater than 99% of bacteria... an N95 mask will only filter out 95% of pathogens, and this is no N95.
Masks are expensive, Tyvek is cheap.
