To touch a cake
    #1718392 - 07/15/03 01:57 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I had one BRF cake that looked like it had a green spot starting on the top of it. So I pulled it from the rest and crumpled it up looking for any kind of contamination. None could be found inside so maybe it was just a bruise or something?

But main question is, when that cake was crubled it felt almost like styrofoam. Not really moist and kind hard to pull apart. Is that normal? If not should I directly mist the rest of the cakes or maybe dunk them so they don't dry out?

They're in a pod right now with "HI" humidity and have been there for about five days now.

Sounds cool. Maybe you can use the crumbled cake for a mini-casing

spawn that crumbled cake into some composted manure and grass clippings outside.

well that one i was worried about so it's just thrown away. i don't want contaminants anywhere near my babies. i have 4 cakes that haven't been dunked now so i'm gonna let them be. three other cakes are getting dunked in the fridge today so i can have a reference between the two. dunked vs non-dunked.

that mycelial network is damn established after incubation. i had no idea it was that strong.

for the dunked ones, i'm used 1/10 h202 to 9/10 tap city water. is that proper?

Depends on the original h2o2 solution, I assume it wasn't 100% pure. If it was, I'd say your a bit on the high side with the h2o2 content; aim for something like 3% h2o2.

Btw, if you toss out a (supposedly) contaminated cake, consider throwing it in your garden on a shady humid spot, covering it with some soil. In some cases, the contaminated cake fights off the contam and produces some shrooms in your garden. Worth the try, I'd say.
