I'm not sure what is going on with a couple of my jars here could someone take a look and give me their opinion. They are ecuadors that have been colonizing for almost five weeks now,it seems that the bottoms are taking along time and I'm not really sure if there is a problem. I read about overlay earlier in another post and am concerned that is the problem I am having. This is my first go and everything has been going good up to this point I thought. Any advice would sure be welcome,I'm just not sure if I should go ahead and birth or if I should wait longer. Five weeks seems to be a long time for this strain according to everything I am reading. Thanks alot everybody

Not sure what your jar filling method is but from my experience if you get it to packed when filling jar it cuts of air exchange at the bottom of the jar.

This is not a case of overlay. Overlay is something that can (rarely) effect trays/rubs.
I believe you may have a bacterial contamination based on how the colonization of your jar appears.

I'm really new to this too but just comparing to my jars, your mycelium just looks odd, sort of wet and dense. Something is definitely going on there, I'm curious to see what people say.

I'm going to have to go with eagles on this. The fact it's taking so long, looks pretty wet, and is obviously overgrowing in areas already colonized points at a bacterial contam.

Ya those jars look on the ugly side, could just be the picture but the only thing i can thing of would be to flip the jars over (don't shake or re-invert as your dry verm layer is your filter and that is just bad juju). Here's some tall 1/2 pints of Ecuadorians i flipped to finish the bottoms of. worked like a charm.

This advice may get flamed, but hey its only advice if you take it... Flipping is controversial lol

Thanks everyone. Any other advice on this would be greatly appreciated. We have some jars that look fine so were thinking we should go ahead and birth and separate those. Birth these as well separately, and try to see if they smell and what's underneath some of the uncolonized vermiculite by scraping or cutting it away. Heard of others trying this. Any thoughts on this, please feel free to let me know. I'll update the good and bad, whatever happens with these.

Here is something I have wondered for some time, and it may provide a solution for you:
If you have a PF Tek jar which has stalled or slowed tremendously, or is growing from a single inoculation point (for some reason the other 3 inoc. points did not germinate), can you birth the partially colonized cake, scrape off the uncolonized substrate, and crumble and case?
I see no difference really, other than the mycelium not being 100% colonized and consolidated...but if you are crumbling it and casing it, does it really matter?

I've birthed 80% colonized cakes due to stalling. While it can work, I wouldn't recommend it. It's mostly a last ditch effort, I wouldn't put them with the rest of my grows either.

The cakes in the original post are bad. Bacterial something or rather

I've birthed several partial cakes. However, in addition to scraping off the uncolonized BRF/verm, I cut off a little bit of the adjacent colonized part too, just to hedge my bets.

That's pretty typical results when you use the wrong size jars. How does one expect air to reach the bottom of the jar so it can colonize? BRF tek jars should always be as wide as they are tall.
Start over, use the correct size jars and follow all sterile procedures this time. RR

Thanks RR! We've learned so much with this first grow. Yes, that's one of the things we were thinking was the jars were just too big, (long). Nice to have confirmation from you. We just watched your videos a couple weeks ago and those helped tremendously. Just when we think we know enough, we learn something new, but we're learning quick and it's so much fun. This was such a learning experience and we ended up with WAY more than we expected. We thought we had really messed up for a time, but these were only two of the jars. 6 of them are on their third flush and we have begun some new "Z Strains" which are going MUCH, MUCH better. Thanks everyone for all the advice and help. Really appreciated. Have wanted to try this for about 20 years but conditions weren't right until now. So excited when we saw the first pin, and we ended up with much more than that. Can't wait to see what these Z's do. So far they've taken off on colonizing like a rocket!
