Winter Camping
    #17171544 - 11/06/12 10:07 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Fun or a miserable few days?

I'm really keen to spending sometime in the woods, unfortunately the soonest I would be able to is January, in Ohio. Waiting on warmer weather isn't an option, but I'm likely to catch a bit of good weather in my time frame though.

Suggestions and Experience please!

For winter camping you usally need heavier gear. Thicker sleeping bags, stronger tent, more clothes etc. If it is going to snow make sure your tent can handle it. That heavy and wet snow can crush a nylon tent with weak poles.  Typically you want a canvas tent with good poles that you can take a heater inside. Nylon temps burn very easy, so they are not great with heaters.

Water usally freezes too, so packing water can be a chore.

Other than that, winter camping is a lot of fun!

Yea the key with winter camping is obviously regulating body temp and preventing hypothermia. I personally have put a lot of money into winter camping gear because when you go in prepared for the cold it's a lot of fun. I follow the basic layering procedure: base layer, mid layer, top layer, and wind/water proof layer. It's important that these layers can be easily removed and put back on since you never want to get really sweaty in cold weather. dry clothes will save your ass. Always wool, never cotton!

Fire is a crucial aspect of winter camping as well. If necessary you can load up a regular snow sled with fry firewood it the trek will be short and not too strenuous. I personally have my dog pull the sled for me

The other aspect is shelter. Although a mountaineering tent will help cut the wind and snow, it is only as warm as the ambient temp outside. A snow cave or igloo type structure is the warmest way to go. I like to construct a wiki-up tripod style frame, fill in spaces with sticks or evergreen brush like pine bows, and then pack snow on top of that. It's like a snow tipi. Even If you're using a regular winter or all season tent then you will need a good synthetic sleeping bag (or down bag if it isn't going to get wet.) This is crucial no matter what your shelter will be. Insulate your sleeping area with a sleeping pas or bed of pine bows. A space blanket can make a good ground sheet that can be used to wrap the whole body and sleeping bag if it really gets cold.

Stay moving during the day, eat snacks often, have a big, hot dinner. Drink plenty of water during the day and tea or hot coco at night... Those are pretty much the basics. Have fun out there!

I think its more of an adventure. You just have got to prepare more. I've had more than a few miserable nights with little sleep because I was too retarded to bring enough warm gear.

Yep. I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say that once you've been truly cold you never want to be in that state again. I got moderate hypo that almost progressed to severe. Luckily I was in good company and had several WFR's with me.

For those who love to be prepared and plan for the worst, winter camping can be real fun.

Everything changes and everything must have a plan.

If your just into camping and having a relaxing time I would suggest to stay away.  If your into getting ready for miserable conditions, wetness and cold, then I would recommend snow camping..

It is a great time building a snow fort, even better sleeping in one.

Oh man.. I am already used to sleeping in cold, right now its around -5 in my room, but I am not wet and there is no wind. Thats about the temperature range I'm looking at though, not too intense, cant be much more miserable than I am daily eh? at least I could have fire outside.

I have looked into a skowtrekker tent myself. They are pretty sweet! They are canvas tents though and I would imagine that they are heavy and therefore impractical for any type of long distance backpacking. Are you going to be car camping?

It's intersting how folks view camping depending on where they live.  Here, we can only think about camping between November and March because of the heat, the bugs and the rain.

What's it like to camp in the snow?

It's very, very different from camping in the heat in most regards. As with any type of camping, keeping the body fed and hydrated and having a shelter is top priority, but that's where the similarities end. Camping in snow takes regulation of body temp to a new level. Because there's moisture everywhere and often wind as well, heat can be quickly drawn away from the body. The right clothing and method of dressing in layers is critical to having a successful experience. Hot food and warm, sugary drinks (hot coco, tea, etc.) is also quite different from hot weather treks where you wouldn't ever want to increase the body's core temp.

Another big difference is that in hot weather camping, people tend to chill out and stay put during the heat of the day whereas in winter camping it is important to keep moving and working to generate heat.

If I ever go real winter camping (like below 70°) then I'll have to bring an experienced companion.  That sounds pretty intense.

Yeah for sure winter camping can be brutal. That's more like real survival where you have all the other concerns but also generating heat and not wasting energy being a large priority.
Winter camping is where fire = life. Well, not technically, but a fire can mean the difference between life or death in some situations. Whereas in heat camping .... fire is just a luxury.
Although I don't do winter camping as often as I used to, it's the main reason I'm so glad I have a nice good axe and saw that absolutely melts through wood. Mandatory winter camping tools IMO

A buddy of mine that I worked with in MN made this video about hammock camping in winter. Its 13 minutes long, but he's a funny guy to listen to and it's very informative.

I used to live in CO and every year we would make a big snow cave and sleep in it frequently. More like a small snow house. As long as we had warm gear we were fine. Definitely got wet though. But it's a pretty fun time.

keep dry

cover up

and most importantly...

BUILD A SNOW CAVE IF YOU CAN.

I have taken survival courses in winter survival and a snow cave is much warmer than a tent if it is really cold.

there were some people who came with us and they tried to use a tent but they ended up all freezing and we had to build those guys snow caves too.

its all about the snow cave trust me.
