Pump, Semi Auto, Over Under
    #17168064 - 11/05/12 06:58 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Im talking shotguns..  It's time I finally buy one for hunting and it's just too hard to chose.

I do like the classic over under but the semi auto is looking better and better to me..  Then again I also like to pump my gun at times sooooo??  I guess I will just have to wait to see what I can find the best deal on for Black Friday.

Any suggestions?  Under $800.

I don't hunt anymore but I've owned a few guns in 60 years.  My favorite shotgun by far was a Ithaca pump shotgun. I finally sold it and later completely regretted it.

I rocked a 20Ga pump for three years before taking on a 16Ga semi auto (first brand new gun I've ever had).

I love my 16, long barrel, good weight, but one problem, it's jammed on me a couple times (and of course it's always at rather key moments).  Some people have a hard time getting used to a pump, and tend to not pump it all the way back (leading to the loss of precious seconds).  If you're used to the action of a pump shotty, I'd say go for that as the reliable option.

But then again my dad just cleaned and oiled mine for dear hunting, and I'm betting that it'll return to it's normal smooth as silk operation.  The white tails will never know what hit them.

I prefer a nice over/under 12 gauge. They're simple, minimum moving parts and offer the option of using two different chokes. It all depends on what you'll shoot at. I hunt upland birds, so having two different chokes comes into play more. If you're after waterfowl,a semi-auto with the third shoot might be more important.

Are you talking about third shot being a diferent load?  This is something that is pushing me towards the semi.  Then again you can do the same thing with a pump and often for less.

I meant 3 shots with pump or semi-auto as compared to two with over & under.

I would get a pump 12ga or 20ga if you are hunting ducks or geese. You should only need a single shot 20ga or .410 for rabbits or grouse.

over and unders are a little heavy to be caring thru the bush all day IMO

All of our guns hold 5 shells.  Sure, you could put in a plug and be legal about it, but where's the fun in that?

Stoeger Model2000 12ga. 3" with 26" barrel...kills everything i've ever needed or wanted it to and did a damn good job. Being recoil operated i though i might have some troubles with field loads but it cycles everthing i put thru it like a dream

I'd go semi auto.
I  have all 4.  pump,semi,O/U,and double barrel.

Hunting with the semi is just plain easier, especially ducks.
I prefer the semi when I shoot skeet also.

nooo buy this you fool

IMO one of the bet shot guns on the market.

A+ for home defense too.

http://www.keltecweapons.com/our-guns/shotguns/ksg/

KSG
The KSG (Kel-Tec Shotgun) is Kel-Tec CNC’s first entry into the shotgun market. The size, shape, and design is similar to the currently available Kel-Tec RFB rifle, but the KSG ejects downward, instead of forward. The KSG weighs 6.9 lbs. and is as compact as legally possible with a 26.1” overall length and an 18.5” cylinder bore barrel. Even with this compact size, the internal dual tube magazines hold an impressive 12 rounds of 12 gauge 3” rounds in total (6 per tube). It can also reliably shoot shells as short as 1 3/4" up to the 3".
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Caliber 12 gauge 3”
Barrel length 18.5"
Total capacity
6+6+1 (7+7+1)
Weight empty 6.9lbs
Weight loaded 8.5lbs
Length 26.1"
Height 7"
This simple and reliable pump action feeds from either the left or right tube. The feed side is manually selected by a lever located behind the trigger guard.

The pump includes an under picatinny rail for the mounting of a forward grip, a light, or a laser. The included top picatinny sight rail will accept many types of optics or iron sights. Forward and rear sling loops are built in, and a basic sling is included. The soft rubber butt pad helps to tame recoil.

The KSG receiver is made from hardened steel and includes the magazine tubes which have been welded in place. The grip and stock assembly is made of glass reinforced nylon (Zytel) and is easily disassembled by pushing out 2 pins, which store in 2 holes in the grip when removed. The barrel and pump assembly is removed by loosening the 2 front magazine tube nuts with a coin and sliding the assembly forward.

I do love the KSG but you would be lucky to find one under $800.  The market on these is highly overpriced.  I do want the KSG real bad but I'm looking for something that I can take to the range 3 days a week and not look like a douche.

Beretta has a semi auto starter shotgun for $650 at Dicks, black friday only.  I'm thinking of going that direction.

Cant find much about it..  Its the Beretta A3000

Guns are something of a specialty for me. I love them and own many. If you're looking for a beginner gun for hunting, you have a huge array of options. Here are my two cents worth:

Were I you, I would buy a pump action shotgun. They hold more ammunition than a single shot (better for bird hunting) and have less moving parts/chance for malfunction/stoppage than a semi-automatic. They are the middle of the road when cost is concerned. Honestly, I can shoot my pump as fast as anyone else can shoot a semi when accuracy is on the line.

I would buy a 12 gauge. It's the workhorse of the shotgun community, and is usable for the widest array of hunting, with the use of different shell lengths.

Now which gun to choose? Since I have been advocating 12 gauge guns, I'll give you the top three choices (my own opinion, of course.)

Mossberg 500
Benelli Nova
Remington 870

Check em. They're all under 800 bucks. Some WELL under 800. They're reliable, accurate, and not too heavy for hunting.

If you're set on a semi or break action, let me know, I'll try and break some down for you as well.

You don't like the saiga-12?

I think those can be picked up for around $500-600

http://www.gunbroker.com/Saiga-12/Browse.aspx?Keywords=Saiga+12&Sort=4

then a bullpup kit later would cost around $200  and you have pretty much the most badass / versatile shotgun you can buy right now.

Eh, I've only fired a Saiga-12 once, but I found it to be clunky and overweight. The magazines are pretty massive and unwieldy, and the reliability overall was mediocre at best.

Additionally, the man originally was looking for a decent hunting gun. If you know anyone that hunts with a Saiga, please let me know. They're built for combat, or potentially the zombie apocalypse, but not for going quail or grouse hunting, or for bringing down a deer.

Plus the gun receiver is made from stamped steel. It's basically a piece of sheetmetal.

Lastly, most states have a limit of 3 rounds for a hunting shotgun. As far as I know, a magazine that small doesn't even exist for the gun, basically disqualifying it from the competition...

With training and proper adjustment of the firearm all of those things are practically not an issue.  you need to properly adjust the gas tube and also lean into the recoil.  failure to feeds happen when the user lets the recoil knock them back too much or if the gas tube is not adjusted properly for the loads.  With the bullpup conversion it is much more wieldable.

plenty of people hunt with a saiga,  if its good enough for combat of course its more than good enough for hunting.  plus you have an excellent self defense shotgun

Yeah, you've gotta hunt with 3 shells (the plug in) if you're hunting a game bird.  But yeah, I don't see those shot guns being good hunting guns, either.  Dunno, that's just my opinion.

Saiga is the Russian Mossberg 500.

Both are workhorses and both go bang but ... ???  Well????  Aaaaawwwwwhhhh HELL!..

It's true, one shotgun isn't much better than another.  Other than ergononimics and adaptability, they are still just a hammer and a tube.  Anyone in prision could build a decent skeet and trap gun out of bed parts.
