Bag Concept - What ya think
    #1715155 - 07/14/03 04:51 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Well, recently I've been becoming very impatient with doing up jars since it is so time consuming so I took some time to think of this "Grow Bag" modeled after the myco bag!

All ya do is get a normal ass oven bag (hint: zip locks will melt if ya try to cook one of those ...) and fill it up with your normal subtrait you would put in your jar (to the most fill half way I guess but I would only go 1/4 just for more air) then put your verm layer on like you would with a jar. Tie that bitch up and cook it up in your pressure cooker or pot (just like you would with jars, surprise!). Let er cool down for a few hours then poke your spore syrign just above the subtrait. Once your finished with putting the spores in poke a about 15-20 holes around the first hole you made then duct tape a coffee filter over top. Also, duct tape the tied up duct tape just to be extra secure and throw er in a nice dark and warm spot and you guys should know the rest.

Tell me what think cuz it doesnt seem like too bad of an idea to me but i dont want to grow a big 'bag "o" mold'

Hhhmm I tried something like this a long time ago but I was so n00b I screwed up. I am not sure if it will work though. I think one potential problem is the water evaporating inside and destroying the bag because of pressure. Also you will have to wait a very long time for the whole thing to colonize. See what some other people think before trying it.

Attach your filter before you PC and that should take care of the bag possibly exploding in the PC.

Use grains and inject from the top, then shake to distribute the spores.
Using mycelium culture would be better.

I'm pretty sure i have the bag popping its self issue solved. The oven bag im using is made for turkeys and has this clip on twist tie thing that should allow enough air flow while cooking to prevent any popping of the bag though i could end up drying out the bag if i dont put the lid on the pan. I figure if the steam from a cooking turkey doesnt pop it the subtriat shouldnt but who knows i guess i could put the coffee filter on first too, sounds like a good idea. I was thinking the same with the live culture.

I think Tyvek would be a better substitute for the coffee filters.  I have also heard that Duct Tape usually harbors quite a few contams, mainly mildew.

just a few suggestions

coffee filters wont work any better in that application than they do in jars.

They are too porous, liquid can be absorbed into them, thus breeding contaminants. Maybe with a tyvek filter it would work better.

Tyvek is a god send, I know some kid who uses it on all his jars with great results.
