My boss was talking about an internet shortage..
    #17162656 - 11/04/12 10:18 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

He was telling how the america, major cities especially are going to have a huge internet shortage sooner than later unless they can upgrade fast enough. With all the devices like ipads and iphones it puts a huge strain on bandwidth. Now every kid on the block has one.
Apparently  this internet upgrade to a whole new system is going to a pretty big project that will lace ever square inch of the city with wifi. Big routers throughout the city is what he made it sounds.

I'm trying to google for some info on this but I can't seem to pull anything up.

Kinda interesting and I'm not sure if he is blowing smoke up my ass or not but i can imagine this could be true. Internet devices are getting huge and with  population soaring like it is, I could imagine a shortage lol. Ever seen that southpark episode with the internet shortage ?

Does anyone know anything about this ? shed some light if you do !

Your boss is an idiot.  There is absolutely no "shortage" of the internet.

Source: I worked in telecom for 3 years, designing and testing the equipment that runs the backend of the internet.

Not really. Internet backbones are fiber optic based and can be easily upgraded with equipment instead of replacing cable, which you would have to do on a LAN (local area network)if they use older standards such as CAT5, but even then since 2004 most companies and people used Cat5e at 1gb/s. Wireless technology is evolving very quickly. Bandwidth consumption isnt growing nearly as fast as most people think, we're just utilizing technology more frequently for small stuff. Everyone realized streaming video was the future a long time ago and compensated for that already. Also most companies place bandwidth caps on wireless devices to avoid over use and network crowding.

Most ISP and companies that use a lot of bandwidth upgrade before hitting critical levels, so there is never really a shortage of anything.

Just to add to this, whenever fiber is laid they lay what they call "dark fiber", which is usually HUNDREDS of lines of fiber they just don't hook up until they need it.  The company I used to work for just came out with a new core router capable of running 100GBit on a SINGLE line of fiber.

America has TONS of dark fiber available. Most companies either sell it off or lease it out, but even then, still tons of it left.

Maybe it's more like a shortage of available radio bandwidth in that area?

Yes, there is only so much radio spectrum that is available and can be used. All of it is owned by government or private companies. To gain more you need to buy it, buy out a company, or license it from the government. Again this comes down to the technology behind the frequencies, no just the radio waves themselves.

When we convert to IPV6, the bandwith is most likely going to be free. Have you seen GoogleFiber? They were offering free internet to anyone if they signed up before said date. In Kansas(or Kentucky) they offer unbelievably cheap services because they feel everyone deserves access to the internet. When Google is pushing for anything it is a powerful force. Same with Bill Gates saying he wanted a PC for everyone in the world!

In this area I have heard of big companies "hoarding" radio bandwidth by not using all they buy, creating an artificial shortage in bandwidth available for things like phones and mobile internet. I don't know a lot about how it all works though.

Remember kids!

Downloading and reusing porn saves the internet and the environment! Downloading and jerking off to one video 10 times saves bandwidth.

Every time you stream a HD porn, five 13 years old girls with experience a delay in their facebook status updates. Think of the children.

Yeah, free bandwidth and free computers? Not likely. Bill Gates wants everyone to have a PC, but the western world will subsidize the rest of the world, if only because there is a growing addiction to internet access...

Google is CERTAINLY not doing it because they feel "people deserve internet".  They are testing something, and it will make them money down the line.  Also, people using the internet = money for Google, since EVERYONE uses Google.

Awesome ! thanks. That is what I was looking for. Yeah he didn't mean that net was going to become overloaded and explode. He was just basically just saying that they didn't take the demand for the net seriously until a little bit ago.

Oh and he is a redneck and with rednecks hella rumors get spread via 30 cases of coors and cans of copenhagen long cut.

WiMax supports this too. In japan they have 1gb/s stationary connections. Too bad in america we used basterd frequencies and shitty carriers.

Also, for many people the "addiction" to the internet is for building knowledge and learning information. Making the world more intelligent through the access to all the world's information is the quickest way to empower the peole.

No not the 'Illuminati', but he was a billionaire before the foundation was started. I am completely supportive of Bill & Melinda, I think they are the opposite of the 'Illuminati', but the money had to come from somewhere.
I also agree in the transformative power of the internet and it's information network, but I can think of potentially tens of millions of idiots who use the cutting edge power of instant global information exchange to tell the world that they are having a bad day and don't understand the opposite sex.

Information is one thing; knowledge is quite another...

plus ill get huge tax breaks!  and i can hire my brother to head the charity and get all mo donations!

sorry, i just hate the "he dontes to charity" red herring as if evil geniuses never think about public relations or have giant departments to manage public perceptions.

i dont know about bill gates tho, im just saying in general.
