Opium poppies found at harbour

Opium-producing poppies have been found growing in grass verges at a west
Wales harbour town.

Workmen spent Wednesday morning thrashing the sides of the roads in Burry Port following the discovery of the offending plants.

Visitors to the area had been remarking on the colourful displays on the roadside.

But it was only brought to the attention of Carmarthenshire Council on Tuesday that the poppies were of the papaver somniferum variety which are not native to south Wales.

The authority's countryside manager Elwyn Hughes said it was a mystery how the plants came to be on the verges approaching the harbour.

But he said it was likely they had been deliberately planted there.

The council was under no obligation to remove the poppies but Mr Hughes said it was felt it was not appropriate to leave the plants growing by the side of the road.

"Instructions were given to remove the poppies and the work was carried out today," he said.

"We were notified about this and immediately took steps to investigate.

"These poppies have been planted on county council land and we are not aware who is behind it."

The papaver somniferum species is more commonly associated with opium producing countries such as Afghanistan.

One of the main constituents of the sap is morphine - which is used to produce the Class A drug heroin.

Burry Port mayor Clive Howells said the discovery had come as a total shock.

"We had thousands visit the harbour for the Amelia Earhart anniversary last month and everyone was complementary about the attractive poppy verge.

"Some visitors have even been collecting the poppy heads."

After scraping the pods and collecting the opium that is...

The odd thing is the fact that in terms of poppies growing in gardens, UK probably has more than all the other countries. How could you even destroy something that looks as good as a poppy, they even sell them at garden centers here...
