How's a FloodHood Even good?
    #1715567 - 07/14/03 08:42 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

ok if you gotta flood howl and its blowing CLEAN Air right, how does this help by blowing all the air around you up.

It just doent make sense why this "we how is clean" air is pushing towards us. I see the point somewhere. but i keep on seeing this one where you work out in the open under/inside the box. Now what keeps comtamns out of this area.

I dont think it matter if the air is clean its still pushing a force or air.

Yes, ive read all the nooks archives too.
any better ideas?

Flow hoods work by moving contaminants away from your immediate work area.

laminar flow.

that's a basic wall of 99.999% clean air, blowing at such a speed that contaminants could not land in it's stream. It's not moving air around turbulently (see turbulent flow), or vortexing. It's moving it in such a way that it comes out like a wall, and the flow keeps everything pushed out of that stream. the closer you are to the filter the cleaner the air is going to be, less chance for airflow to be inadequate.

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/pfric.html

It's directly related to the ammount of pressure behind the flow. That determines if it is laminar or turbulent. There is no pressure besides ambient pressure behind a fan, thus it's flow will be turbulent. But when air is forced through HEPA filtration at the .8" (that's water column, or pasqual), it creates a laminar flow (assuming the airflow is strong enough).

My friend built a positive pressure glove box that operates under the same principle. A HEPA filter forces air into the box which blows over the work area and is then vented through the arm holes. The volume of moving clean air prevents contaminations from settling. It works fine so long as he keeps his freakin' hands from getting between the air source and the work area.

better filtration and positive pressure (filtered, with HEPA) are my suggestions. You cannot just have a box with arm holes. Well you can, but they don't work too well.

thats not 100% true.It filters out the "air born cotaminats" only so you still have to clean the work area surface.

I know it filters air. How does a filter work? Particles are passed through it and captured or diverted to a benign area.

Cleaning your work surface is just common sense.

I know you know that! hahahah
I was just making sure people(newbies) who read that wouldn't get confused and this that it cleans "everything" inc. the work surface

i'm sorry maybe i should had worded it different

and yes i know how a air filter works

It is always very helpful to apply physics + math to mushrooms cultivation, all too often the scientific nature of cultivation is lost.5 shrooms Raadt.

damn'ed if u cant
my box w/arm holes fuggin rocks!
well its got gloves attached, not just holes.... but still only cost me like 10$.....
and i never ever ever get contams....

(well that is untill recently.... but it wasnt the box's fault....)

ah i digress... point is, if u gonna make a box with dishwasher gloves, use lots of lysol and your set....
its way cheaper than a flow hood.... and just as effective....

only down side is its a bit cumbersome working inside that friggin box....

(i have a love hate relationship with my glovebox...)

I must divert the attention from me, and say that anno taught me all I know about this. Anno and the mushroom cultivator. It's not my knowledge, but something I learned from someone, and am passing on.

long live anno!
