Huge Fungus!
    #1714305 - 07/14/03 03:11 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

Hey guys, I found this monster of a fungus growing next to a tree. I?ve never seen a fungus this large before, so I thought I?d share.

My foot is size 13 for size comparison.

And here?s a pic of a neat thunderhead formation I saw the other day.

Peace shroomerites!

Those look like Meripilus giganteus, which is edible.

To verify, bruise the underside of one of the caps (the pores). It should turn black within a few minutes (certainly less than 1 hour).

Happy mushrooming!

It does indeed bruise black ToxicMan. Thanks for the ID!

Gary Lincoff (Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms) says it "tastes and feels like beef liver", and rates it as a good edible. I'll leave it to you to decide if a liver tasting mushroom is good or not.

Happy mushrooming!

Well, I harvested a bit of the Meripilus giganteus. I must say that liver flavored mushroom isn't very good at all! However, I didn't cook it into anything or use any seasonings, just ate a portion of it plain. I'm gonna see if I can use it in some kind of sauce or something. Peace.

thats pretty cool. i found a huge fungus like that one day... but it wasnt edible i dont think, ive seen tons of the same fungus on tress in my area, but not of this size.

it was strange, me n a buddy smoked some weed and decided to cut down this hill instead of walking down the road... we were trying to get to our delaers but ended up on the wrong side of a creek and went the totally opposite way... it was fun, we ended up hardcore bushwhakin (which we do a lot anyway) and climbing (more like walking) up some huge fallen trees, it was a little scary.

Well, I've done a bit more research and have an update.

Although most books list that mushroom as Meripilus giganteus, that name is being used incorrectly. Apparently the true M. giganteus has not been found in North America.

The correct species name is Meripilus sumstinei.

There is no difference to the mushroom you found vs. the books, the books have just been using the wrong name.

My reference is Mushrooms of Northeastern North America for the new name, and mention is made there of misuse of the other name. One of the ironies is that the same authors used the incorrect name themselves in previous books they wrote.

Happy mushrooming!
