Hunting Fungi and The Man

So what's the best way to avoid trouble with Big Blue if one is out hunting fungi? Some of the problems I've encountered are:

1. People calling the cops on me
- This is fuckin' annoying
- Best advice I've heard so far is to wear an orange vest to be clearly seen, and thus avoid suspicion.
- Generally don't look like a hoodlum

2. Random stops and questionings from cops (basically, "wtf are you doing?")
- How should one handle this situation?
- What to do if one has a backpack full of mushrooms (not necessarily actives, but to the uneducated officer a bag full of boletes that bruise blue can be awfully suspicious).
- What to say? What not to say? One could try to treat it like a normal encounter as described in the stickies, but this is a unique case because one will normally have pounds mushrooms of various types on their person.
- Any advice here is helpful about how to handle this encounter

3. Trespassing... how to get that cluster in someone's yard
- My best strategy to date has been to knock on the door and ask permission.
- I have not yet had anyone say no. Usually they want to come out and talk with you about them, and find out what they are! It's nice to meet new people, but then you have to talk with them for a little while, and is  a pain because it can cut into your hunting time.
- If no one answers you just make a little fuss, call out, "Hello? Anyone home?" and grab the fungi.
- Another effective strategy has been quickness.
- Maybe have your camera ready and snap a quick pick, but don't dawdle around trying to ID them on the spot.
- Walk up, grab them, and gtfo. FAST. Less than 30 seconds fast!
- If you're too slow, see #1

Tell the cop that you are looking for mushrooms.  I have told several cops this and they go away without looking at my mushrooms.  Don't try this in a place where mushroom picking is prohibited.

If mushroom picking is prohibited, tell him you are hiking, or studying bugs.

Don't offer to show the mushrooms to the police.  Do not consent to a search.  Don't hide the mushrooms either.

If they arrest you for mushrooms that don't contain psilocybin, expect to pay about $1500 to get out and have a felony arrest record forever.  The charges should get dropped on the first or second court date, so no need to hire a lawyer unless they test positive.

Tell them you are collecting every mushroom you see so you can ID it at home with the internet.  If you have a large variety of mushrooms, they should let you go.  If you have lots of little brown mushrooms that all look the same, they might not let you go.
