agreed, however most people don't have PC's and don't want to invest the money in getting one. I have had a lot of success doing PF jars utilizing steam sterilization. I have a two tier vegetable steamer that has never failed me. You just have to know how to manipulate each method to get good results.

If you are working with a Brown Rice Flour/Vermiuclite substrate steaming is fine and will work great.

If you're working with whole grains such as wild bird seed, rye, millet, etc..  You need to pressure cook.

Why?  The temperature along with the pressure are strong enough to kill little tiny microrganisms/endospores and other little things that can cause contamination later on.

You can use a pressure cooker for both, but grains must be pressure cooked.

Hope that helps

Fractional sterilization works for grains using boiling with decent success for many people on this board. _Must_ use pc is not altogether true, although it is highly recommended and easier for grains. I've even seen people microwave popcorn and have success with it...
