Dual Element Ion Generator
    #1713745 - 07/14/03 11:04 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

I was looking over at FMRC for spore samples. I am planning on buying a bunch with their new deal going on now. ($10 per spore sample)

Anyway, they also offer an Ion Generator. Stamets says this doesn't work, however according to a post in FMRC this ion generator is has two elements, positive and negative. FMRC says it works. Does it?

Ion generators are crap. A $30 hepa unit does a better job. The ionic breeze by sharper image is a decent air cleaner, but for $500 you can build a 24"x48" hepa hood!

And I've never rocked it, so I hate to knock it, but I've heard bad things about FMRC's spores. IOW, they are contaminated and non-viable. Good only for microscopic study, assuming you know the spores from the contaminates. But that was just hearsay, and a long time ago at that. If Stephen's cleaned up his rep since then, I apologize in ernerst.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

The difference that FMRC cites is that the ionic breeze has only a negative element. FMRC says their unit uses both negative and positive elements that allows it to filter the air as well as a flowhood.

Here is a quote from FRMC, "Yes, the Ion is much better for sterile work than a flowhood."

Go for HEPA, that is tried and true... there is really no benefit to an ion generator anyways, they are usually more expensive.

Hey man, if you trust his word, cool. I respect a lot of what Peele has to say, but I certainly judge it all against my experience. And
Quote:

"Yes, the Ion is much better for sterile work than a flowhood."

certainly doesn't jive with my experience.

How can anything be much better than perfect? A small homemade flowhood is cheap, easy, and 99.99% effective. What can possibly be better? 99.999% effective? Well, I guess if you really minded having 1 jar out of 1000 contaminate, then yeah 1 out of 10000 is better. But if you're doing thousands of jars, I would imagine you'd be in a whole other league from anything I'd know about.

I do know that I had an ion air cleaner that cost about $89 10 years ago. Had both negative and positive. The thing didn't work as well as a smokless ashtray.

What does the FMRC part stand for? I've never heard of the place.

--EDIT-- Never mind I read the site and found out.

stephen's sending me one of these soon,
so i'll try to let y'all know if it's worthwhile or worthless.
and stephen doesn't guarantee his spores samples other than to guarantee the correct species, but that doesn't mean that one can't work with them , he carries some you can't find anywhere else.
