Anyone sail?
    #17134285 - 10/30/12 11:30 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

I wanted to learn to sail, and besides buying a boat and fumbling around I was looking for a good way to learn.
Did a bit of reading, and it was suggested that crewing on race-boats was a great way to learn "trial by fire" way.

Trial by fire was right.  I felt like an idiot (and sometimes still do) but as long as I was trying my best and working my ass off, everyone seems very willing to teach.

Great way to enjoy the outdoors!

What are some of your experiences on the water?

I love sailing, don't get to go out that often. Used to go out at least 3 or 4 times every summer on the Munin viking longship in Vancouver. totally need to find something like that out here... and if it doesn't exist I need to build one and get it started

Sailing always seems to me like an extremely physically demanding activity, and expensive as well. But it looks like a great time!

While racing, it's quite demanding.  It's like doing a lot of sprints with short rests in between.  Then multiply it by the number of hours racing and by the end I'm tired as hell (as well as beat up from hitting hands, shins, heads, knees, elbows, etc etc..)  However, it's one of those "I accomplished something awesome" tired feelings, so it's well worth it IMHO.

Cruising is a whole nother story.  You can do each maneuver at your leisure, so it doesn't have to be hard (unless you're batting bad weather...)

As far as expensive.  Yes.  But crewing is free, and the owners pick up the tab on everything

I bet it's really satisfying after all that to just sit down and relax. Sounds like a great pastime!

Yes, that's where the mass quantities of rum come in handy <GRIN>
