Psilocybe cubensis on manure/straw compost, cased with 50/50+

this is intended to be a very simple method of creating bulk substrate casings using matierials easily available in any city without having to head to the country to find straw and sources of poo. To pull this off, the only real skills the mycologist needs is knowing how to successfully colonize a few quarts of substrate, and how to care for a casing. Grain is ideal to use because of it breaks up easily and contains lots of nutrients, but PF Tek cakes will work fine to just inoculate the bulk substrate (wear gloves and break cake up into small pieces. more pieces = more points of inoculation, avoid using a blender though).

average yeild for cubensis: 1.5 oz per casing
average fruit sizes: 6-8"
sunk cost per casing (unreuseable matierials): ~$2.50

List of matierials required:

40 lb bag of Cow Manure and Organic Compost (home depot/lowes etc) $1
1 aluminum (disposable) turkey roasting pan $3
1 mini-bale of straw (arts and craft stores, ie. Michael's) $5.50
2 plastic cat litter boxes (walmart, target) $1.99 ea or the big $4 one which is deeper A(recommended)
1 pillow case that can be ruined $5 for 2
1 large pot for straw pasturization (i use my pc)
1 candy thermometer (walmart etc) $2
1 brick $1
1 bag Vermiculite (home depot/lowes) $4
1 roll of foil

pre-shredded straw + manure/compost used

Step 1: pasturizing straw

make sure straw is cut up to <3" long. put straw in pillowcase, just make sure its gonna fit in your pot with water. tie off the pillow case. the bale i got came pre-cut so that saved a lot of time. put water in large pot/pc, add candythermometer, set on low heat and stabalize the temp between 160-200F. add the straw pillowcase and put the brick on top to keep straw submerged. let this go for ~3 hours, checking on it every so often and adding hot water to it to compensate for the evaporation.

Step 2: pasturizing poo

this step should run paraellel to step 1 because both steps require about 3 hours of cooking and some cooling off time. so when your straw is on the stove, preheat oven to ~200F and do this step. dump poo into turkey baking pan (the BIG ones filled to the top will do 2 casings) add some water just to get it moist, not muddy, cover with foil and throw in the oven for 3 hours.

Step 3: draining/cooloff

when 3 hours are up on the straw, dump the water, hang pillow case to drain for several hours (or stick it on a wire shelf or something like the pic). When the poo is done, switch off oven and just let it sit till its cool. this is the point where i'll let the stuff sit overnight to drain and cool down.

Step 4: prepare work area

lysol it down, turn off sources of air current, bust out the rubber gloves, lay out cat litter boxes, straw, poo, something to scoop up poo with.

Step 5: bottom layer preparation

to reduce chances of contaminants moving into your casing, its aviseable to put a small (< 1") layer of vermiculite in the bottoms of the cat litter boxes. make sure you microwave sterilize the verm. add to microwave safe bowl, add some water to hydrate it a bit, cover with saranwrap, nuke for 3-5 min.

Step 6: layering substrate

once the vermiculite layer is in place, add a layer of poo, try to keep each layer under 1". On the poo, spread about 1 pint of colonized grain or chopped up pf cake. On top of the substrate, add a layer of straw picking out any large pieces you come across and tossing them in the trash. then you add another poo layer, spawn layer, and straw layer, and at about this point it should be near the top of the cat tray so add one more thin layer of poo and MAKE SURE all the straw is covered. any pieces sticking up need to be removed. straw will contaminate easy if exposed to the surface.

Step 7: cover, wait, & case

cover the tray with foil and stick in dark warm place to colonize. in about 5 days the tray should have mycelium tearing through the top layer of poo. Case the tray using whatever you like to use for a casing layer. I use a coir/verm mix ~50/50 with some lime as a ph buffer. patch casing as nessesary to keep it even and throw into a fruiting chamber when the casing layer is fairly colonized (approx 2-4 days after casing)

Step 8: Fruit like normal
yup, thats it.

EDIT: I'd like to add that potency is greatly increased over pf cakes and grain casings. 1.75g of product consumed by test subjects resulted in level 3-4 (possibly 5 at times) experiences. At 3.5g a veteran quality control tester was floored, reported that it was the most intense 3.5 g ever.
