2 questions for casing

someone i know is about to case for the first time. He plans on using plain vermiculite(he couldnt locate any coco coir), he is worried about overlay and was wondering if it was really necessary to let the mycelium take over part of the casing layer, or if he could just cold shock it, without any mycelium on the casing layer. he was also wondering if casings are safe to just left in a closet, or should they be put in a storage container so they dont get contaminated. One more thing, how should he sterilize the vermiculite.

Yes bro, it is nessisary for the mycel network to grow over your bottom casing layer. It needs this time to repair its network after being broken up out of the jar.
They should be placed back into an incubation style area. Steady 84F-90F, VERY clean place. (The network is rebuliding, and can not fight off contam as easily as it would %100 colonized in a sterilized jar.
After the growing begins, patch and case the top layer. Make as even as possible and patch as soon as Primordia is vissible. This is a big key to a winning pinset. So as you can see, the rejuvination of the mycel network when first cased plays a big role in the fruits you will get.
You can PC dry verm to B anal. You can cook it in the microwave for 60 mins (only in a pyrex dish/bowl) Or what I normally do (not that it is a good way to do things), cook it in the oven @ 450F+ for an hr.
Case when materials are cool to the touch.

It explains all of this in the cultivation FAQ's. You don't want your incubator to get above 86F though. 86 is ideal but it shouldn't get any higher. Mine is set at 84.

are u insane?? 60min?? you will melt the house if u left your microwave on for 60min!!
ive always overmoistened my casing material a bit (it will lose some moisture in the microwave), cover with saran wrap, and nuke for 5 min... take it out, shake it up a bit, then nuke again for 5 min.... then place it in the over to cool.....
viola! done... no contams...

Yea you are crazy 60 fucking mins is insane. And by the way you do not need a bottom layer or so i've heard because I did not use one in my casing because I was told there was no need to.

Ive cased many times without incubating the casing. Just put the verm on and wait. If your casing is small and thin an even pinset is easy and you probably dont even need to patch really.
You shouldnt just let it sit out in the open unless you want to mist it all the time. Put some preforated plastic over it. Like a piece of a trashbag. Or Just put it in the fruiting chamber. Like I said there is really no real need to incubate it.

listen to what xic clone said he's right you should incubate after you make a casing.if you don't incubate you'll be cursed with contam because the mycelin can't fight off anything it's trying to recover from you cutting it all up to make your casing, big or small i say incubate anyway. nuking something in the microwave for 60 mins is fucking crazy thou, try five mins then shake it up and another five like hyper_dermic said that works fine.
