The most important thing I need to know is whether or not these could be harmful to my dogs.
Habitat: Growing in my back yard. NE United States. In the dirt
Gills: Orangish. Spores look like rust on my hands
Stem: Stem is about 3 inches long, 1/2 inch diameter
Cap: most are 3-5 inches. one is over 12 inches
Spore print color: Probably brown when dried
Bruising: no noticable bruising
Other information: No scent

Interesting observation. I think its a Gymnopilus species, and if not that then Pholiota. You should post this on mushroomobserver.org.

Yeah, gymnopilus sounds about right, although they have a bit of that hypholoma look to them. Still, the spore color seems consistent with gymnopilus.

I was thinking Gymnopilus junonius, but I can't see any sign of a annulus. Gymnopilus seems most fitting tho.

Stems and spore color are wrong for Hypholoma sp. My guess is Gymnopilus sp. given that they are heavy spored, you can see the spore print/lines.

Could be wood buried in the dirt, I have seen and heard of it many times occurring in lawns like that.

So now onto the important question...do these pose a health risk to my dogs?

Wasn't aware gyms do that too but as I just looked it up, they do.

I've already thrown them away. The stems were pretty firm and seemed solid. I'm sure I'll have more in a bit....they seem to come back pretty frequently.

Those were legit. No signs of bruising but definitely active. Also found another larger bunch growing the following week.

Also legit.

Can you retrieve them and mail them for microscopy? I will cover the expense...
