First time, LY, from Sporelab
    #1708244 - 07/12/03 10:35 AM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Hey everyone, my brother's best friend's uncle's pet squirrel has tried growing their very first batch of shrooms on BRF cakes, the LY strain, ordered from Sporelab.

Well, he was very careful during his innoculation process. He boiled the jars in water for a little over an hour, let cool for over 5 hours, and innoculated each jar at 4 points. It has now been 2.5 weeks. Only 3 jars have begun colunizing, all 3 only at 1 of the 4 innoculation points. One of thses 3 is contaminated.

The squirrel thinks his boiling was success because after this long only 2 of the 12 jars show contamination. One jar is about 1/3 colonized (probably would have been finished by now if all 4 points had spawned. The other non contaminated jar that is colonizing just started two days ago at one point so isn't far along whatsoever. The squirrel is curious as to what the problem could be. The temp has been varying between 80 degrees and 90 degrees (I read up to 93 degrees is ook for Lipa Yai?).

As far as what the squirrel might see as the problems, he told me he added a little extra water to the brf solution on accident, maybe an extra 10% too much. Could this cause the problem? He did pack the jars fairly loosely, and added a 1/2 inch layer of dry verm on top.

His greatest suspect is that maybe the syringes weren't too good. He saw a few specs in the water, but the water overall was very clear. He read that that doesn't mean the syringes are bad, but looking back now, do you think that is a possibility? Has anyone else had problems with sporelab syringes? How was customer service in terms of a warrenty or replacement if you did have problems?

Anyway, the squirrel sends his thanks, he's stumped and frustrated, about ready to throw away the jars that aren't colunizing and start another batch. But he wanted to hear from you guys first. Thanks again.

Someone please help, it'd be much appreciated, the squirrel has some severe anxiety problems and I think either helping him out with this problem or hooking him up with some xanax (the vet wouldn't prescribe it) would help a lot.

wish i could help. the syringe certainly seems to be at least partly responsible:i'd get in touch with the vendors and tell them - most reputable ones will replace for free.

Well the vendor was very helpful, he is sending the squirrel a replacement, I'm going to try innoculating something like 10 jars instead of 12 next time with one syringe, and be very meticulous about getting the water content and substrate density in the jars right. I recommend sporelab, very friendly and helpful.

it's nice to hear someone crediting a vendor for coming good in times of trouble. not every syringe could be 100% fertile and viable, that wouldn't be natural.

thumbs up to the vendor for replaing without quibble.

Syringes are 10ml right? 10ml for 12 jars, I think I see the original problem.  :crazy2:

It happens sometimes, ask for a replacement i'm sure you'll be able to get one just explain your prob to em :stash:

i don't think any vendor would stay in business for microscopy purposes only. in many countries across europe it is legal to cultivate mycelium and even mushrooms - just don't let em dry out (except naturally, by accident

10ml / 12 jars = 0.83 ml per jar

0.83ml / 4 innoc points = just over 0.2ml per point.

Unless you have a very sterile environment, perfect conditions, an evenly sporulated spore solution, and a lot of time - you will have difficulties.

ok but if you tell tlg thelittleguy that you think the syringe is bad and tell them why like your brf jars didnt colonize you will get a response "we will no longer sell to you any more any more emails will be ignored" and your shit out of luck so if you think you have a dud syringe just say it was bad no other explanation on cultivating

OK Thanks guys, I read about some people successfully cultivating 12 jars with 1 10 ml syringe but I guess the squirrel got ahead of itself for a first timer. Do you recommend 10 jars, or even less?

Thanks again.

Personally, I use 1ml per point, but I'd go as lows as 0.5ml per point if I was short on spores.

Jackals Tip Of The Day:

A lot of spores get caught at the syringe-needle join. When you've emptied the syringe, withdraw another 2-3 ml of sterile water into the syringe and you're good for another jar.

Oh btw this makes sense for US vendors but this vendor is from Canada so really nothing to worry about.
