What's everyones favorite brand of birdseed to use?
    #1707361 - 07/12/03 12:22 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I've been using Hartz Cockateal seed, and I must say it sucks. I use my standard ratio of 120 grams seed to 70 grams water and it's way to much water, I pull the grain out of the cooker and everything is exploded and looks way to wet. I did some experamenting and found that it works decently with 120 grams seed to 55 grams water, I just can't store in the cooker overnight or they explode again! I've been storing them in the oven at this ratio after PCed and my syringes are germinating, but it's taken a while to get this seed to work right. I used to use Penningtons WBS for a long time and it worked great, but then Wal Mart stopped selling it and I can't find it anywhere.

I use an 18 quart Presto PC by the way.

What is everyones favorite brand of seed and water ratio with the seed for pint jars? Also what kind of PC do you use? I've noticed this plays a role as well.

I also asked what your prep methods and water ratios are, that's what I meant.

Clear bag, white label with a picture of a bird and the words wild bird feed. Ingrediants: white and red millet, sunflower seeds, corn (a few sticks from something too but it didnt say that on the label). Barcode with numbers on the back.

If you call that a brand name....

I have always noticed it is better to find the most generic kind you can find, as the more specialty seeds (and more expensive) are usually coated with fungicide and other "shit" as Alien has pointed out. You can wash that stuff off I have heard, but why go through the trouble when you can avoid it. Go for a big bag of cheap stuff and check the label for additives.

I dont like birdseed because it always explodes on me during the pressure cooking process or it turns out too dry. I always soak then boil mine before straining and loading into jars, I assume you put the seed and water in the jar together?

All the different brands of birdseed have a different ratio of seed, and level of hydration out of the bag.
Experiment with ratios is all you can do...

Yeah, i'm going to switch to generic on my next run. I'm also going to do the soak and PC method instead of the add grain and water and PC tek. It just seems like I get way to many exploded grains.

I'm just worried I won't strain the water out enough and they'll PC and be to wet.

Hartz parakeet seed works fine with 1 cup seed and a half cup water per qt jar. A pinch of gypsum doesnt hurt either.....;)

If the grain explodes it means you cooked it too long.

This doesn?t happen. The excess water goes into the exploded kernels. The more excess water, the more exploded kernels.

I have tried hatz and penningtons, and found penningtons to be the best. Hartz for some reason turns into a sloppy mess. There really aren't birdseeds that are just bad because they are all made out of the same thing, it's just that your preparation techniques might not work for a perticular kind of birdseed when they would work for another.

Anno, i'm not sure what you mean. I soak the seed for 24 hours, then I let it sit in a strainer for 2-3 hours until all the water is strained out. The exploded grains come after you pressure cook. After soaking there will be no exploded kernels. At least there never has been before for me. I always had the problem of not straining all the water out enough.
