guys i did a good thing the other day when the shroomery was down
i walked out back to find a monarch butterfly stuck in the netting i have around my plants
so i got a pair of snippers and freed him and he flew away with a good impression of humans.

It is a Crusader Bug - Mictis profana I had to look it up as I was unsure of its name. At times there can be hundreds on certain plants in my garden. I cant believe I didn't know what it was as I had always grouped it in with the stink bugs.

All summer ants have been loving up on my Hylocereus undatus; I suppose it exudes some kinda of nectar? Anyways, saw some tiny exoskeleton-clad beings chilling on some new growth.

He's a good 4"+ massive caterpillar! Does anyone know what type of moth this is?

This is a yellow jacket and an unknown(to me) critter on Claviceps purpurea sclerotia, (ergot) growing from some organic rye. RR

would that also be known as Ergot, or is that only part of the same family?
if so, how hard is it to culture in a controlled environment?

Yes, it's ergot as stated in the post above. The fungus is active in the soil and gets on the rye seeds when planted in the fall. I always spread out a 50 lb bag of rye berries every year just before the snow falls, so it comes up the following year to feed the deer, which helps to keep them out of the garden. Ergot is rampant in this area and infects about half the stalks. I don't know about growing it in captivity because it's so easy to let nature do it. RR

It's more likely a butterfly than a moth. RR

well it'd be advantageous to be able to cultivate a large amount in a small indoor space no matter what season it is outside.
