My 1st Martha / Greenhouse *update*
    #17070784 - 10/21/12 01:27 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

This is my 1st greenhouse. Experimenting is just plain fun. Part of my goal here is to strike a good balance between easy set up, low maintenance, and strong results. I also want to minimize buckets, tubes, construction, and electrical devices.

Every step I take is based on research and info from various TC's and peeps who's opinions I trust. Nothing I'm doing is new, I'm not making any of it up, nor am I attempting to assume credit for someones hard work. I don't know who came up with what, as i see stuff all over the place without credit. If you recognize something you deserve credit for, let me know so i can thank you. The idea about RH and FAE premise is based on stuff i understand RR to be saying, thx RR

I'm open to suggestions and tweaks from those who have experience with a similar set up as mine. I've been reading this forum for about 2yrs now, and it's time to poop or get off the pot.

Please don't hijack my thread with debates about other FC's. I'm well aware of there existence

Thanks in advance for so much wonderful info, in no particular order and not limited to: Damien5050, DocT, RogerRabbit, Agar, TranscendingLife, Megash. Thx for the light.

Here we go

This is a Martha or Greenhouse style fruiting chamber (FC). It consists of 2 main parts:
1 The shell made of a PVC frame with clear vinyl wrapped around it
2 A 5 tier wire rack shelving unit inside the shell

The whole thing sits in a plastic catch pan usually used for animal cages. There's about a 5” space between the shell and rack, all the way around, so air can circulate freely.

The vinyl will come down to about 3” above the catch pan. I'm thinking i'll put 3” square holes near the top, 2 in front, 2 in back, and 1 on each end. And there's a zipper door in front.

A Vick's V400 will sit on the bottom shelf inside the FC. It will hang over the edge a bit so the moisture is not obstructed by the shelves and stuff above.

This set up should allow plenty of moisture. FAE is accomplished by fresh air entering from the bottom, mixing with moisture, rising, and escaping through the vent holes above.

EDIT:
These are the bulbs I'll be using:

EDIT
The whole thing skinless and with skin

Catch pan 29d x47w x1h

Close up of upper corners. It's a T and an elbow at each corner

Parts list:
(6) 1”x 10' PVC
(8)T's
(8) Elbows
Vick's Coolmist V400
Catch pan
5 tier Wire rack shelving unit
Clear vinyl

Thoughts, tips, suggestions, questions?

by using a rubber maid container instead of a catch pad u can make a heated water bath that almost never needs to be filled lol.. use an aquarium heater

can u say no cleanup

dont forget your gonna want lighting above each shelf.. thats what i did anyways... should be ok for cakes

Can u say stagnant water? Standing water leads to contams.

No need for a heater unless optimal temps cannot be obtained.

i used a bulge pump the water like a live well.. but if your humidity is to high your gonna get condensation from the next shelf up and this is gonna drip on your cakes.. slanted shelf would be better or useing a clear sheet of plastic as a run off to the back.

thx for the idea. but i'm not really sure what the benefit is when i got CM for RH. IMHO, this sounds like an unnecessary added level of complication that requires more monitoring and potentially could have negative effects, primarily, as notahacker420 mentioned....mold and mildew.

its possible i'm missing something, but it sounds like your suggesting a setup that involves a lot of standing water, which is not recommended.

My hope is to dial in my FAE and RH to the point where there's not much dripping water. Then, the pan is just for the occasional drip and drop.

What u could do is fill a pan with moist perlite and place it in the bottom, to aid in the humidity.

At least put a stone bubbler from a fishtank in the catch pan, so the water is always moving.
From what I understand, and somebody correct me if I am wrong, but the natural daylight flourescent bulbs work wonders. I upgraded 2 days ago, so I can't post results. the bulb cost me $10 from the local fish store, and light fixture I already had, but the store was selling them for $15 a piece

i would really like to avoid hooking up more pumps or tubes, or using messy cumbersome perlite.

If I can accomplish my goal, i won't have enough standing water that warrants a bubbler or pump. Maybe just an occasional wiping up.

Quick vote: does anyone think my goal here is foolish, unreasonable, or otherwise unobtainable?

You're spot on. After dialing it in perfectly, you should have no pooling of water on your drip pan.

I've been fiddling with it for a couple days trying to dial it in.

right now, My CM is set for 30 mins on and 15 mins off. I have a slight amount of condensation on the racks and stuff, but no serious standing water to speak of, it seams to roll to one corner.

If i leave my CM off for 30mins, a lot of the condensation dries up. A couple hours with the CM off, and it's almost dry in there, except a little puddle in the one corner of my drip pan, but it shrinks. I can just ever so slightly feel the air coming out of the top vent.

I'm pretty sure this is a sign of good FAE and RH. Maybe someone with experience can shed some light on my way of thinking.

Bottom with CM and vent propped open

Top with vent propped open

And honestly guys, dialing it in perfect before you get it filled is a waste of time because having blocks of substrate, or casings, in there as well as the misting you'll probably do once or twice a day will change all those settings. But it doesnt have to be perfect if your putting in large blocks of substrate or especially casings. 80% is fine if it drops to that and then goes back up. Perfect in fact.

The humidity should get nice and high at night while the lights are off (90+%) then when the lights come on (sun coming up) it should dry up a bit (80-85%) and stay that way for the day until the lights go off (sun going down). Now it might not be easy to get it just like that but fluctuations of 90+% humidity and a drop 10% or so from where it is (80%ish) will give you that evaporation if it lasts for a few hours. That dryness in the day is needed though for good flushes.

I like to mist when the lights come on and just before going off as well. Nice morning dew and water replenishment at night.

The condensation could be do to warmer temp inside the greenhouse and cooler outside. I had the same problem, what I did is point a little fan at it "on the outside" and unzipped it about 6 inches or so. By doing so it got rid of my condensation problem and helped with fae.

There will always be drips that form at some point. As long as they evaporate at some point in the day so water doesnt sit anywhere for longer then a day, its no problem. Water takes a few days before I'd call it "stagnant". A dialed in greenhouse wont have that problem. But of course substrate will suck water out of the air and take in some of those water droplets so the stuff I said above (in the other post) applies.

Thx. I really appreciate your posts, as they seem to confirm my understanding of a "dialed-in" set up.

I've looked at a lot of set ups and read lots of questions. I think a lot of people, including myself, make things way too complicated. Most people would benefit from a basic understanding of aerology and meteorology.

Some of my gadgets have become obsolete as i learn to trust my eyes more and know what visual clues to look for.

Thx to your input and confirmations, i think I'm finally on track to my first real successful grow. I can leave all those other contraptions behind. 5 fresh ones to you
