Drying problem....
    #1705635 - 07/11/03 11:32 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I put the mushies under a fan they get cracker dry after about a day or two. I then place them in ziploc bags and a few days later they seem to rehydrate....I keep them in a cubby hole and the temps are around 75-85 degrees am I storing them wrong? how can I keepem from rehyrdating?

There must be a fairly high humidity where they're being stored, I guess, maybe double bagging them would help, or put 'em somewhere else...hmmm, maybe a little desicant in an empty tea bag inside the baggie that they're in would do the trick.

they were dry on the outside, but i bet the middle was still a bit humid.. did they crack when you bent them or just bend?

if not completely dry they will sweat when bagged and apear as if they re-hydrated...

open that back up and place back in front of the fan!! don't leave them in a bag wet!!!

wow, a lot of people on the board must be harvesting. Yay!

anyways, buy some dessicant. It's much cheaper than buying a dehydrator and much easier. Go to home Depot or the local supermarket. look for Damp-rid, dririte, dry-z-air, etc. any of these work.

take a large tea bag, cut it open, empty tea leaves, fill with dessicant and tie with string. place in the ziplock bags with your fan dried fruits.

I just use coffee filters to make dessicant packets using oven dried epsom salts as the dessicant. It works great.

Here's my cheap tip :

I bake some rice on a pan at 350 for around 30 minutes. I then use the baked rice as a dessicant to store my mushies. I just put some rice in the bag with the mushies.

I can't get my shrooms to be cracker dry with the fan. Once they are pretty dry, I store them in these ziplocs with a little baked rice and a couple days later, they are bone dried! I also keep the ziploc in a sealed glass jar.

hope it gives you some ideas.

.fs.
