I've not read his book. I vote cannabis. Cannabis is definitely my Goddess, Mary Mother Of Mercy Jane.
Wasson is obviously full of shit, just try eating some damned toadstools. Not that I've finished experimenting with these things but they most certainly are type of shit. The Vedas describe all these wonderful effects.

My belief is that Soma/Haoma/Amrita/Amata/God is all Psychedelics (Entheogens) including Amanita Muscaria and Marijuana and that They are who all the Saints, Prophets, Buddhas, Messiahs - were worshiping.

When was the last time you had a trip on cannabis?
When was the last time you had a trip on magic mushrooms (or another psychedelic?)
How would you believe my answer if you can ask that question after I have said that I believe Psychedelics are God?

I agree, just that Wasson went too far with advocating toadstools, definitely not the supreme psychedelic of all. Cannabis helps me remember those mystical realities that mushrooms gave me, so I don't need to take the mushrooms any more. I may go there again one day, but never without cannabis to help me get through the trip. In my opinion smoking cannabis is wrong, that does not work so good, this Goddess should be eaten.

I'm not so sure as you (and others, such as endogenous) that Wasson was wrong. After all, he was among the very first to bring psychedelic mushrooms to the attention of the west, as early as '53 and his work was publicized by Life mag, (which, although it's dropped off the contemporary radar today, was THE major news mag of the day) in 1957. "Soma" was not published until 1968.

zzRipz, thank you for posting the link to that article on the secret drugs of the ancient buddhists. I've only started to read it, but it is eye opening, and I've been on the Dharma path since '74. I owe you a debt of gratitude, thanks again!

In NZ these amanita muscaria blanket the pine forest floors in the millions and it is hard to find anyone who would consider trying one. What kind of 'Soma' is this?
