Is Fire Alive?
    #1705113 - 07/11/03 06:19 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

It consumes.
It produces waste.
It produces offspring.
It uses oxygen.
Its mobile.
It reacts to its environment.

This is how we classify if something is alive, so is fire alive?

According to that definition, yes, fire is alive. Next question. :smirk:

Is it a useful definition? It depends on what things you want the word "alive" to describe. One extreme is to say that anything that reacts to the environment is alive. This leads to the conclusion that all material things are alive. In a certain philosophical context this makes perfectly good sense. The other extreme is to say that it must be a creature made from DNA and that has brain activity in order to be (legally) alive. You can draw the line anywhere in between.

first definition of "biological" at www.dictionary.com :

"Of, relating to, caused by, or affecting life or living organisms: biological processes such as growth and digestion."

Many times when tripping, I've come to the realization that fire is very much alive. I always bring a lighter with me tripping, its a great comfort to whip out the little guy and just be amazed by the flickering flame.

Fire is a chemical reaction. Life is also, arguably, a chemical reaction, although much more complex

You're here because you know something.
What you know you can't explain,
But you feel it;
You've felt it your entire life.
That there's something wrong with the world.
You don't know what it is, but it's there....
Like a splinter in your mind...
Driving you mad.

umm, since the transer of the rapid oxidative process of combustion is not mediated by any form of genetic information transfer --- fire is most certainly not alive in the sense that plants, animals, fungi, protists (all the eukaryotes) of bacteria & other monerans (the prokaryotic organisms) are alive... (and "organisms" like viruses & prions are more on the order of "wild messenges" rather than "wild  messengers")...
but fire (and crystals) can indeed "grow" under the proper conditions...
perhaps examining the entropy & enthalpy of these activites can give us some clues  ...
(maybe life can be considered to be a dynamic balance of the crystalline world and the world of the flame... small pockets of anti-entropic processes in the surrounding sea of chaos... (inset stock footage of 4 elements here --- earth, air, fire, water; & optional fifth element (spirit, prana, wood, metal, space... whatever...) as local culture allows  ...) hehheh...)

Thats true.  By the same reasoning, if you were looking at rocks your whole life and found fire, you might think it was alive.

I'm a little biased: I think everything that exists is alive.  :nut:

Just a general statement of perspective, we relate to things we understand as being alive having a nervouse system, eating, pooing, being like us, ect (in general), for all we know rocks feel intense pain when you step on it and wind hurts when you compress it and atoms live a daily hell *slight sarcasm*. Though if thats even true it would be a much different form of existance of "feeling". In life we dont know why we feel and why we are concsious (we can creat robots eventualy that to our understanding can do what we do and better but not be conscious and not have feelings to our defenitions), though you could get technical and say its the connections inside your brain releasing chemicals or whatever but IMHO I think its a phylosophical issue.

If it cant express itself like US we are use to calling it not living, aside from the dictionary term, technically you can view the person next to you as not living so long as you dont feel what they feel, torture them and you wont physicaly feel anything and emotionaly well that depends on your mental state hehe, my point is, so long as your not "it" it can always be in YOUR perspective as not alive in a sense if you get what Im saying.

Kind of an extreme example I suppose, just throwing in my giberish

Edit: I dont want to sound like a shuv in your face know it all, I just believe what I wrote/write, and I like to express it strongly to an extent to make it look like facts, to me they are, its all interpretational.. perspective.. bleh
