Beer experimental LC
    #17029793 - 10/14/12 02:17 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

wanted to set up an experiment to test beer as a Liquid culture. Kinda thought it would be cool lol
i have two honey lcs going and a clone jar so im not worried about failing this isnt a big deal, just wanna see what might happen and maybe help the community and answer some questions. so here we go

10/14

2 pint jars set up just like a honey lc
some natural light in the bottle(bottle is optional but its the best damn beer ever lol)

first i measured out 50ml of beer and 100ml of water for each jar

i went with it in one, in the other....

i boiled the alcohol out  (start with 70ml before boil)

then put in the jar and covered with foil labeled and into the pressure cooker they go

set timer for 20 minutes after the steam started coming out of my petcock

stay tuned guys, ill keep it updated

i noticed no carmalization after the pressure cook, jars were still very clear with nice golden color. no sediment at bottom like with honey lc

so i inoculated with 1cc of liquid culture i had last night shook it well, then this morning i checked and shook again.
when i got home from work i checked and my two honey lcs i used, have some myc growth in them. the beer i didnt cook the alcohol out of had some. the beer that i did cook the alcohol out of has by far exceeded the other 3 jars. i have to wait till my girlfriend gets home before i can post pics but, i would say cooking the beer then using it in an lc definately works, if not better than the honey lc lol

Cool man I've passively been thinking of trying this. Think of it this way beer is made from malt and does have nutrients. So logically There's no reason it wouldn't work. Good luck! Another week you should be ready to do agar or noc some wbs. P.S. next time use real beer.

Been there, done that. Beer LC does indeed work. Its cheaper than honey, but you might be better served by making a malt dextrose solution. Its brewers malt, so your solution will be quite similar but much less $$$. These days, I use a dilute MDA (agar) solution which is a bit pricier than just malt dextrose, but it has a wider variety of nutrients available.

if it works it works yanno. i was just drinking beer last night while i was pcing my grains and brf jars and was like, yanno itd be cool to try this. i wanna grow some shrooms in a liquor bottle as a novelty thing but i havent quite figured it out yet
