Looking For An Axe/Maul Combo
    #17043544 - 10/16/12 05:42 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I'm in the market for a new axe, my old school wooden handle broke and the head is really dull by now. It was ten years old. I want to get an axe/maul combo so I no longer have to deal with the wedge and whatnot. I'm hoping someone here has suggestions on what to look for. It seems fiberglass handles are where it's at these days, but I'm not at all against using a hickory handle if it'll last me another ten years. I have a Gerber hatchet and I love it, it's incredibly rugged, but obviously too small to split large logs with ease. I know they make an axe that comes with a saw which locks magnetically into the handle, but I don't think they make one with a splitter head on it.

I digress, but anyway, what kind of axe do you all use and could you give me a price range and brief review of it's strengths and/or weaknesses?

Thanks in advance

No one? Eh, well, never hurts to try asking around. I'll try asking at SurvivalistBoards

UPDATE: I ended up buying two axes. One is a standard axe head on a hickory handle (I have a wedge already) and the other is a Fiskar's fiberglass with a flared head, kind of a hybrid deal that's made for splitting and chopping. It was probably overkill to get both, but winter is fast approaching in the high country and i want to be ready for some snow day fires

Some seriously respectable axes. Hand-made in Sweden, 20-year guarantee.
Next time you are looking check em out. I got the small forest axe and that thing is brutal

Wow they look kick-ass! Maybe it has to do with the history of northern Europe, but feel like I would automatically trust one of their axes, especially a battle axe

Ya they are very bad ass. Those swedes are hardcore about their knives and axes.
Mine was the sharpest axe I've ever freaking seen when new, And ya I definitely trust it. They hand stamp the name of the smith who made yours
