Incredibly odd growth on Star Gazer - thoughts?
    #17037882 - 10/15/12 10:13 PM (9 years, 1 month ago)

I've started a set of cakes of Star Gazer (**** SPONSOR ****) in verm / rice flour. I think I need to replace the lids for the Ball jars, which may be letting contams in.

Made 8 cakes, 5 look more or less good. One cake didn't make it (thinking Lipstick mold, it's brown/red), and two cakes have odd white growth. I've taken a picture of one of these cakes. The first picture shows the normal mycelial growth, but the latter two show the other white growth. It doesn't look like Cobweb mold. I've enclosed some pictures and would love to get some thought on it. I'm likely going to pitch the contam cakes.

Edit:  Please keep sponsors + cultivation separate.

did you follow the pf tek? if you have your dry verm layer in place and dry, its probably not the lids. with that high of a contam ratio, check your sterile procedure/sterilization times/temps n such.

I tried to do a time-saving move where I mixed up 8 portions of the verm / brown rice flour in a sterilized bowl instead of doing each cake properly. Did everything else the same, from wiping down the lips of the jars, 1 hour boil in pot, 12-16 hour cool down. Probably just rushed through and am reaping the benefits (/sarcasm) now.

lol, probably. its the #1 mistake made in this hobby.
try upping your cook time to 90 minutes. mixing all teh sub at once isn't a big deal, so long as your not packing one and loosely filling the next or something boneheaded.

In this hobby, cutting corners to save time results in time lost 95% of the time.  We mention times in the teks for a reason

its ok to mix sub all at once. I thought that's how everyone did it...
Wouldn't mixing them 1 jar at a time take forever??? I doubt that's what did it unless you screwed up the ratios.

I've seen this look before. Almost looks like a yeast. You can see a ridge where it meets the myc.
Well good luck on the rest

Edit: for future reference, you don't need to mix in a sterilised bowl.
Its getting sterilised AFTER its packed.

You can make as large a batch as you want.  However, a one hour boil isn't going to sterilize the mix, especially when you used the wrong size jars.  You're supposed to STEAM them for 90 minutes after the steam begins escaping from under the tight fitting lid.  This means your water needs to be 'boiling' for around two hours to accomplish the above.

A pressure cooker would help so much, I think you have a bacterial infection, hence the yellowing color.

Edited for misinformation.
PFTEK does not require a pressure cooker.

Damn, this is seriously the most helpful thread ever.

Next go-around I'll have new lids and longer time (just always worried about making them too dry).

Thanks for all the help everyone's provided.
