Personally, when I use fine grain on ordinary pf cakes I get more pins. Even more when I use the shake on the bottom of the bag. Maybe its just my experience though. Sometimes after dunking a cake, Ill roll it around in fine grain verm to cover most of the cake. I get ALOT more pins that way.

they can both be utilized for the same purposes, I prefer a coarser texture in cakes for the mycelia to more easily run through the substrate. Fine may work better for casings and for rolling cakes in, as previously suggested.

can you just put coarse verm in a coffee grinder and get fine verm?

The above is just an illusion.

I did this a few days ago.

The Vermiculite that was available to me was far too coarse, so I ground it up in a blender. The result I got was a strange sort of mixture that had some coarse bits, some medium bits, some very fine bits, and a lot of dust. I strained out the dust and useed the medium to fine grain bits. I used the remaining coarser bits as a dry top layer.

This is my first attempt, btw.

The medium holds less water, but creates a more airy substrate. I use medium grade(cause it?s available).

I have purchased 4 different brands of verm and have never seen any mention of grade. I live in a very big city though so it is possible I just have never seen one with a label. Anyway, I like to use fine grade for my cakes and a much larger grade in upsidedown plastic jar lids to set them on. This provides a big well o moisture and tremendous fruits.
