A bar that sells Absinthe!

Well I had my first taste of Absinthe the other day, and I like it quite a bit!
I only had one glass, but it was enough to get me a little tipsy before work (I work in a bar anyway, so no biggie). What a taste! I'd have to compare it to Sambuca without as strong of a licorice taste, and MUCH sweeter (could be from the sugar cube).
The chick at the bar did it all up, too. The way I've read it's supposed to be served: melting the sugar cube into the glass and adding water. It was kind of fun to have this drink prepared in such a way for me.
This place has TONNES of the stuff, too. Bottles and bottles of it. They had more Absinthe than any other liquer!
I think the thujone content has to be MUCH lower than back in the day in order for them to sell it here in Canada, but the stuff is still 150 proof so it packs quite a punch
On top of all that...the place is just a sweet chill hangout place. Know what I mean?

This place must go through a lot of it.
They're using empty bottles of it for candle holders on almost every table

Absinthe?
It's on Erowid, if you want a lot of info
Quickly: it's a liquer made with wormwood, which has thujone in it, which is at least mildly psychedelic/hallucinogenic.

I didn't know that Absinthe was legal in Canada... the only country I've ever seen it in is Spain. Do they sell it at liquor stores as well in Canada?

Well I'm not sure about that...but I think since the thujone content they are allowed is MUCH lower than the thujone content in the good ol days, there shouldn't be a problem.

No as far as I know it's not sold at ANY liquer stores in Canada. Well at least not in Ontario.
This place is the ONLY place I have ever heard of selling Absinthe in Canada. Absinthe itself isn't illegal in Canada, but Health Canada has a limit on the ammount of thujone that can be in a consumable product. I've heard that's how they get away with it - the Absinthe does not have a high thujone content.
I've also heard that it's possible to order some from countries where it is legal, and that is how bars can "get around the law"...
Personally I think it's Absinthe without much thujone.

yeah the absinthe you get these days legally has none of the halucinogenic ingredients it used to have.. at least if it does, you'd die of alcohol poisoning first. Its just like a strong spirit now.
I once read that it is the reason the french were a bit rubbish in World War I.. they were all bombed off their head on absynthe half the time

"Although it is banned in some Western countries, absinthe isn't controlled as a drug but as a food. As with many other things considered poisonous, you aren't allowed to commercially make food or drink containing more than trace amounts of thujone. However, simple possession of thujone-containing ethanol solutions will probably not get you into legal problems. Presumably you would be legally liable for any possible damages if you gave absinthe to others to drink. Artemisia species are completely legal and are attractive perennial ornamental plants. In the United States of America, absinthe was originally banned by Food Inspection Decision 147 in 1912. Now, thujone is banned as a food additive according to Section 801A of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of August, 1972. Wormwood was included on a list of unsafe herbs which the FDA released in 1975." i made have made undistilled absinthe with gem clear, smirnoff 100, and some port wine. the wine was the only one worth drinking. i still hve some smirnoff absinthe i have been trying to gag down.

Yeah most of the Absinthe going around is fake. There is some real stuff you can buy in Eastern Europe I thought. But I think it would be much easier to buy some fake Absinthe and throw some wormwood in it. Would that work?

it would give you the effect of absinthe, but the taste is horrible. if you think you can handle the taste, then go for it. get some vodka, grain alcohol, or absente (if you want a better taste) and put the wormwood in it to soak for a couple weeks. strain it with a coffee filter and be prepared to gag.

Why would real absinthe which contains wormwood be okay to drink and home-made not?

both are ok to drink. the homemade stuff just tastes like....ugh. i couldn't remember a good way to describe it, so i tasted some just now. i still can't describe it. it is strong and not tasty. tastes a little like licorice for just a second. then kinda like bark or something. it needs to be distilled so that it is not so harsh. if you can handle shots of gem clear/everclear, you could probably handle homemade absinthe.

Wormwood is without a doubt the most vile plant I've ever tasted, and thats saying something cause I'm a bit of a survivalist. If you thought it tasted good, it didn't have real wormwood in it.

Absinthe is my drink of choice, its the only drink that makes me forget hours or even days.... It tastes beautiful very sweet IMO , but packs a punch. The first time I tried it, my gf had just had a glass and was gurning to say the least, so me being the hard man drank my glass believing I could keep a straight face.... I was wrong Its an aqquired taste, but the effect it has is a lot cooler than plain booze
I commend anyone that is willing to make their own......

They don't sell it at the Local liquor-mart. But They will order it from over-sea's for you, But you have to pay the extra $$$$.
