i agree, i had the same experience. wbs cakes are likewise poor.
it's not too late to scrape that casing off, and (cleanly) spawn that badboy into some more straw and/or poo.

My friend fruited straight from birdseed only once (Treasure Coast) and it was unremarkable. Lots of fruits were produced but they were on the small side, and anemic looking. Maybe it's a strain characteristic.

You guys and girls must be doing something wrong. I have seen 1 qt.seed cased put out over 450 grams in 3 flushes and it is still going. Cased bird seed has been doing better than the straw. We will see with the new project .

this is 2 quarts, and it really sucks.... plenty of air exchange (2 air diffusers hooked up to a double fish pump), plenty of humidity (geolite + water) .... cased with verm+coir+oystershell.....
what more could it want?

Maybe it's just Mazzies that don't like it, although i would think any cub would like WBS. Try popcorn, my friends find it a far superior substrate to anything else. Crazy colonization, easy preparation.

i agree...........some dude has used 100% WBS cakes (KS and EQ) with pathetic results-- 12 cakes produces a shitload of hyphal knots, primadora and mini-mush with about 3 mature mushrooms.
there were much more hyphal knots than normal and the cakes dried out faster than normal. perhaps this is why WBS works so well as spawn.

no bottom casing layer.... 2 out of the 3 casings were struck by green and the humidity is 100% (as it should be for pin formation) ive never had a problem wiht BRF casings with high humidity... they were a little fuzzy at the bottems... but nothing critical...
