Hiking in the rain...

So, the rainy season is officially here...
Being from the sunny and dry interior, i've never learned to love the rain. I have goretex, i have merino, i have fast drying tights... but i still get wet, cold, uncomfortable.
What's the secret - if i wear waterproof lowers i am just soaked with sweat. It's a lose lose.

I don't mind wet as long as I'm warm. Try snow camping. You'll never feel cold and uncomfortable in rain ever again.

Regarding snow camping - i think i could be more comfortable with that. I know how to layer well in the snow, but never grew up around the rain.
Well, i went out today for 3 hours and it was raining pretty heavy for most of the hike, Luckily there was substantial tree cover.
On top i wore a hiking bandana - which although wet, kept my ears warm.
For my torso i wore a lightweight merino long sleeve with a soft shell - i was incredibly hot and took it slow, soaked to the bone with sweat, but warm.
Lower's were tights with fleece lining. This worked alot better than shorts, they kept me warm when wet and dried quickly.
I wore heavy duty hiking boots (which i normally don't wear) and they kept me dry as a bone even walking through puddles 4" deep.
(last time i did the same hike i wore cotton pants and running shoes in the rain figuring my body heat would keeep me warm. I got sooo cold.)
I guess the best option is really to keep moving to stay warm, and bring a change of clothes. I think i would rather wear running clothes and hustle than to go slow and sweat my ass of like today.

For me its all about bringing options and layering. Also, your not going to stay completely dry but you CAN stay warm. I bring many different layers and also a couple pair of gloves and hats in case they get too wet from rain or sweating(I tend to run hot). A final tip would be to replenish the outer waterproofing layer on your jacket, hats, pants, gaiters, etc. There is a waterproof-breathable fabric CLEANER that cleans the fabric and restores its breath-ability and then there is a fabric WATERPROOFER that restores its ability to shed and bead water, etc. I have especially good results when I use both these products together. NIkwax and Grangers are brands I see at REI and have used them both...its not cheap but one bottle of each is good for multiple uses or multiple clothing items.

I just spent a wet weekend on the coast in the rain. It really was not that cold but I was wet the entire time. The key is to try and keep dry base layers right on the skin, and then past that it doesn't make too much difference if the rest is wet. Just keep moving, and try to keep your sleeping bag dry, and make sure that it is not down. I think the hardest challenge will backpacking in the rain is to remember to drink enough water.

I'm going hiking in the rain tomorrow. Oh the joy. It will be fun though, I have quite a few baeocystis I'm planning on bringing with. Hiking 15 miles round trip. But rain is nothing, I live in Washington. Hopefully I find my bottle opener I left up there last time. If there isn't snow already.

Yeah, I love oil skin stuff and the filson pant's are killer, but i would die of heat really quickly in them in any moderate temperatures.

I really don't have any problem with it except for wearing wet socks. Once my feet get wet they go soft and I get all sorts of sores and blisters. I have some waterproof boots but they are heavy and also 2nd hand so my feet get sore if I walk too far. If I'm gonna be wet for days on end I'll probably go for some sandals with some warm socks when I can get them dry.
Other than that I'll usually just wear some nylon running shorts and a fleece or some kind of wool or synthetic fiber shirt. My legs never really get that cold.

The rain is wonderful to walk through, if your in a forest there is a chance that you will get less water on you, also knowing that you will dry and warm up later when you get home usually helps to deal with it, just try to enjoy the freshness of the moment, wear good waterproof clothing otherwise you will get soaked which in turn will just discourage you from enjoying the hike.

I've found prolonged exposure to rain, even with the best gear, means you're going to get wet.
Yeah the key is keeping the wet warm.
On the east coast, there is nothing finer than a hike through rain on a summer hot day wearing nothing but short-shorts.
