a. Habitat = on my lawn in NY in July.
b. Characteristics of the gills = see the pic's. :eyemouth:
c. Measurements of cap and stem. = cap about an inch, stem about 3".
d. Characteristics of the stem = seems hollow, and thin.
e. Characteristics of the cap = see the pic's. :eyemouth:
f. Spore print color = see the pic's. :eyemouth:
g. Color that the mushroom briuses = no briuesing that I can tell.
h. Scent of mushroom = errr mushroomy.

Much Thanks.

Its some type of Conocybe, let me dig through the books and see if I can come up with a species. I know this one is very common but I forgot its name.

No, defintiely NOT liberty caps/Ps. semilanceata

I think the species is Conocybe lactea(something along those lines) I may be wrong though, can't find my book right now.

I found this mushroom growing in my lawn in MA, no clue what it is. July climate, around 80. Stem about 3 inches long, solid. Cap is curled up brownish, about an inch and a half in diameter. The stem is wider at the base and gets narrower towards the cap. whitish stem and brownish cap. I just tried to upload the picture but apparantly it has to be under 100 kb? well so theres a bad description any help would be appreciated, Drums.

1. Read the sticky threads at the top of the forum. There are instructions there on how to write a good description. You'll at least need a spore print for an ID.

2. If you want this to be noticed, you should probably start a new thread for it.

3. If your photo is over 100K, there are plenty of free programs (and lots of expensive ones, too) that will reduce the size of your photo so it can be uploaded.

Happy mushrooming!

is this a stupid question... but what can you learn from looking at a spore print?
I've read and read various threads from people responding to posts on wild mushroom hunting, and they always say "take a spore print!" and if its btwn a range of black to purple, its alright. (I'd like to assume there is more to it)

please, check this out...

what can you get from looking at this print?

thanks.

When identifying a mushroom under the current scheme of things, one of the very first things to be considered is the color of the spores in deposit against a white background. For identification without a microscope, that's the only function of making a spore print.

Your photo looks like a low magnification photo of a spore print. On my monitor it looks black. Keep in mind that the color wanted is not the color of the individual spores. We need the color of the spore deposit, against a white background. Under the microscope the individual spores often appear to have a different color than the deposit has.

When using a microscope, it's also useful to measure the size of the spores, note their shape and ornamentation, and view them stained with Meltzer's Reagent. Most references have enough information to use those data to help confirm an identification.

I hope that answers your question.

Happy mushrooming!

More magnification would be needed.

There are certain characteristics of spores. Size, shape, etc. You can identify a mushroom to the 100% exact species by looking at a spore print through a microscope.

Printing a print for color however is different. Spores come in different colors, so it helps narrow down the genus.

I would disagree that a spore print would be an accurate method of differentiating Similar species.  Alot of similar species have overlapping spore sizes, and shapes.  Usually it takes a combination of ALL the macro and microscopic characteristics in combination with habitat to be 100 %, and then still their is alot of confusion alot of the time.

Spore prints in combination with Macro characteristics tend to get you to genus, and can be effective for species sometimes, for some species.

If you are dealing with a single habitat, with NON-RELATED mushrooms, and you are just trying to figure out which mushroom is the Psilocybe, and which is the Conocybe, then 100 % seems more reasonable.
