need Photoshop help
    #1703006 - 07/10/03 04:44 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, I really suck at photoshop.. and I?ve been messing with this cd cover for my band but I can?t do it right.

here it is thus far..

What I?m trying to do is get rid of the black shit around the Skultamaphon part...but I just fuck it up with an eraser.. there?s gotta be an easier way.. I remember something with illustrator where you can just make a line and tell it to do something and it would trace all around whatever you had.

So can anyone help me with this? If need be I?ll send the large .psd file.

I know, I wanted you to pm me so I could give it to you :-p

there are software bots that scan forums like these for valid email addys and add you to spam lists.... no joke, that's how they get a lot of their addresses.

Dunno if you've got it sorted yet, but there's a few ways to go about this.

Probably the easiest is the extract filter:

Select the layer wih the logo

Goto filter -> extract

Under tool options, set the brush size to about 15 or 20 and select
smart highlighting

Trace around the edge of the logo. You want the line to be as thin as possible and covering the edge, not iside or outside. With smart highlighting the line should automatically follow the contours of the image and automatically size it's self.

Select the fill bucket and fill in all the areas you want to keep

Hit ok.

This will usually extract well enough by it's self. If there are any problems you can turn off smart highlighting and draw the outside line manually.

Alternatively, if you hold the lasoo button down, you'll get an option for 'magnetic lasso'. This will automatically trace around the colour contours with a select marquee and you can manually delete the areas you don't want.

If you have problems with either of these, then you can use the pen tool. Trace bezier curves over the edges of the logo. Right click on the curves and select 'Make selection'. Then goto 'select -> invert selection' and hit delete.

Any of these methods are far easier and more accurate than using the eraser.

Take care

The way Phyl suggested will work, but there is another way that will work that will be a bit cleaner, if I may suggest.

The biggest problem you're going to face is that the purple is morphed into the black - so there really is no way to take out all of the black without taking out much of the purple as well.

What I would do would be to separate out the entire logo into it's own layer. Then copy layer. In the first layer, remove all of the purple and (external) black. This should be easy enough with the magic wand tool. This will leave you just the green (with black innards) letters. Save this layer.

On the second layer (all of the title), treat it like a drop shadow. Select it all, recolor it - I'm assuming you want to keep the purple. So recolor it purple, blend colors, feather them.. however you want to do the background color. Then move (or copy) that layer to directly behind your first layer. This will give you the effect you are looking for, I think, and will do so more accurately, pretty simply. And you won't have to go after it pixel by pixel.
