Chopping Straw???
    #1692789 - 07/07/03 11:10 AM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I was curious if anyone had any clever ideas for chopping the wheat straw. I don't have a wood chipper. Right now, I am cutting it up with utility scissors. It works great but man, my hands are tired.

And maybe I should ask, does everyone chop it at all? The straw is for oysters.

Just thought I would ask just in case I am missing an obvious idea here.

Thanks,
artfan1

A lawn mower might work.

i use a wood chipper :-\
But some one here showed a pretty cool way using a large bin, and a weed wacker(Strimmer)
You half fill the bin with straw put in strimmer, cover with a bin bag, and strim away.
Also a lawn mower with a collection bag, just lay out a thin
strip on tarmac ext, then mow it up.

Thanks! Both are good ideas. I will try them. Sure beats using scissors.

My old mower recently blew up (literally!) so I purchased this one. You can remove both the bag and the side output making it a mulcher. I'm actually going to try this today and I'll report back!

If the straw is bailed, you might try a chain saw or bush trimmer. Just watch the kick back.

I don't have any pictures, but the weed whacker does work. It's a bit of a pain, but no more than getting hand blisters. I used a 5 gallon bucket that was placed inside of a big black plastic garbage sack. The neck of the sack was closed around the handle of the weed whacker after the weed whacker's head was put into the bucket-o-straw. BZZZZZZZ. . . .It's not perfectly clean, but not much mess either, considering. . .

the mower worked really good! a few pieces were not chopped correctly but were very easy to weed out and re-chop. all in all the best way assuming you have a mulching mower.

use the weed whacker. Put some straw (a pound or so) in a 32 gallon garbage can and whack away . don't try to whack to much straw at once as
that is counter productive. I used this meathod to make a 3'straw log it took 10 minutes at the most.

just a question, not exactly on topic but does it matter substrate-wise if you use Hay instead of Straw?

There is a difference.

Straw: "The dried remains of fine-stemmed plants from which the seed has been removed in threshing."
The color of straw is golden.

Hay:"Grass that has been cut, left to dry in the field and then baled. It is fed to livestock through the winter when fresh grass not available."
The color of hay is greenish-grey.

What you want to use for mushrooms is straw.
