just had a thought.
    #1700995 - 07/09/03 11:45 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

i was just thinking about something most of us know, but probably never really think about. we all say the sun rises and sets, but actually it doesn't; it just appears that way to us.

this was learned only recently - the phrase has not yet been eliminated

In the grand scheme of things, a few hundred years is not too long ago

yes, but it is more than long enough to get rid of certain sayings that are outdated. how many sayings from the 80's are still in use?
not many. i just thought it was weird that something so commonly known is ignored for the most part. we've had a few hundred years to accept this fact.

Well how long were those sayings in use from the 80's?

They were only a "fad" type of thing.

Saying "the sun rose" may not be technically correct in a hard scientific and litteral way...but it still gets the meaning accross quite nicely in a straightforward way.

Which would you rather say?

"The sun is setting"

"The earth is about to rotate so that we can't see the sun anymore"

Get my point?

What would you say if you were in a different part of the universe, say on a spaceship, originally from Earth, so far away that you couldn't even see the Earth or the damn Sun?
Better yet, what would you say if you were blind?
Perspective, my friends, perspective.
Peace.

"Which would you rather say?

"The sun is setting"

"The earth is about to rotate so that we can't see the sun anymore""

i would rather enjoy the beauty of it and say nothing. as my first post stated: "we all say the sun rises and sets, but actually it doesn't; it just appears that way to us."

it has nothing to do with what you or i would rather say. it has everything to do with how we view the universe.

edit: sorry, i didn't mean to mislead anyone with the stupid 80's reference.

My point exactly!

Language is, in some aspects, fairly arbitrary. The phrases and words we choose to carry meaning do not have a meaning until we give it to them. As long as a phrase carries the intended meaning, it doesn't matter really what the words are themselves.

its just a fuckin' expression.

the sun is setting, the sun is rising

thos are the best ways to verbalize what you want to express, just because the terms were based on an archaic idea, does not mean the terms are "outdated", because language evolves. the word/saying may be the same, but the meaning or our understanding can be different.

"the sun is setting, the sun is rising"

It's language we created when our understanding of reality was more primitive. Humans have expanded their dimensional vision.

When looking at a beautiful sunset I always say:

"The universe is about to perform its illusory rotation which is an artefact of our convenient rotating geocentric coordinate system, so that the sun moves below the horizon"

But the people I associate with use another phrase:

"Shut up you babbling nutcase!"

The searing sun is surprisingly rising over the distant horizon.

have you ever used the term "what's up?"

or "that kicks ass!"

or "looks like the shit's about to hit the fan"

I was in Norway a few years ago on exchange. One night I happened to say "damn, it's cold as shit out here!" to a guy from Belgium. He gave me the funniest look and said "but...isn't shit warm?"....
