Best Popcorn Tek *w/pics* -UPDATE 12/10/12- 3

First of all let me say that if you follow my tek you will reap nothing but success in record time. For a long time I have read popcorn as an inferior substrate for mushroom growing, that it is very prone to contamination and very difficult to get the proper moisture content in the grains. Again, if you follow the tek you will find that popcorn is your favourite grain ! -----------------------------------------------------------
For the following steps you will need...
1. Jars 2. Polyfill for your lids (VERY IMPORTANT) 3. Popcorn 4. Large spoon 5. Pressure cooker 6. Alcool lamp or lighter or any steady flame 7. A Cubensis print or syringe of your choice
-----------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------- Ok, so get your jars and polyfill and also a sharp object to poke a hole in the lids.

Poke a hole in all your lids. The hole has to be quite large to fit the polyfill and most important AIR EXCHANGE. I see people wrap the shit out of their jars with aluminium foil and other stuff... this is very wrong... okay maybe one loose layer of foil is good but hey we got polyfill here so no need for foil ! Air exchange is one of the most important if not the most important part of using corn. Without proper air exchange you will get pools of water at the bottom of your jars and that will cause contamination. No air exchange = contaminations for sure.
----------------------------------------------------------- Now that our jars are ready we can start preparing our spawn and this is where most people fuck up with corn. No pre-soaking or predetermined simmer time here. You simmer the grains until they are ready.
First, dump the required amount in the pan.

Cover with water.

Set the heat to MAX and bring to a hard boil.

The second your water is at hard boil lower the heat to about half to maintain gentle boil. Cover and let simmer for 15 minutes.

----------------------------------------------------------- OKAY, this is where we learn how to gauge moisture content of your popcorn grains... they say a picture is worth a thousand words! Here it is.
Try and zoom in the pictures to really see the difference. Also try biting in the grains, when they're ready they'll be soft and very easy to bite through with no crunchy part in the centre. The husks on the grains will start to split as well. Don't over cook them, you don't want the husks to flower out just to start to crack a little bit. When you see some of the husks split on some of the grains they're ready. ----------------------------------------------------------- When you judge the grains are perfectly hydrated strain out all of the water either by tilting the lid on the pot and emptying it in the sink or if you have a colander use it. When the excess water is gone dump the grains back in the pot and let them sit for a while with the lid on the pot. Speaking of pot, go smoke a bowl while your grains consolidate.

----------------------------------------------------------- Next few steps pretty straight forward...
Fill the jars, leaving some space at the top.

Slap on the lids

Add a couple jarfuls of water to your pressure cooker, deposit the jars in the PC and twist the PC's lid on and turn the heat on MAX. When the pressure reaches 15psi reduce the heat to about half and cook for 60 minutes.

----------------------------------------------------------- 60 minutes later, turn off the heat and let the pressure in the pressure cooker drop. Open the lid, take out your jars and set them aside to cool down.

Once they are cool to the touch just inoculate as you would with any other substrate.

I don't use an incubator, I find them to increase chances for contaminations. I just stick my jars in the cupboard over the fridge and they colonize in record times !
This is after only eight days

Once your jars are fully colonized... well that is up to you !

You can use it as span for straw or just case it as is. This tub was spawned about twenty days ago and started fruiting about 3 days ago.

Or you can turn it into something like this.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Here is an update regarding the obtained results using my tek !

-----------------------------------------------------------

The tek looks great and was nicely written. The problem is that most people here aren't big fans of using popcorn as grain spawn except for RR. He loves the stuff!

Thanks for this! How well does this perform (yield, size, speed of colonization) when compared to brown rice flour technique?

All these outcomes depend... You could totally optimize this tek by providing perfect colonization and fruiting parameters. Temperature, humidity, air exchange and light exposure.

Oh sorry. I was thinking you could set these up like BRF cakes in a terrarium. Still learnin!
Great pictures btw. Makes it super easy to follow!

You could set them up like BRF cakes, just use wide mouth jars and give them extra time for mycelium to get extra thick then dunk and roll.

Honestly great write up, really clean nice job.
I've never even considered using Popcorn, I've had such success with WBS/Rye/Wheat that I didn't see it as necessary. The real advantage here is the short prep time, and how simple it is.You can literally have jars ready to inoculate in just a few hours, from start to finish. No soaking.
I'm impressed.

Do you not run into the same problems one could get by not soaking wbs for 24 hours? Is corn less susceptible to contamination as wbs is when not soaked long enough?

I started my grain work with popcorn. Its pretty easy to work with but it has its downsides. The area for the mycellium to colonize is much smaller then rye and way smaller then WBS this means less mycellium for when you spawn meaning it will take longer to colonize the same amount of sub as WBS or rye. This is why it seems that popcorn jars fly when colonizing.
It also just doesnt seem to produce as well as rye or WBS in my experience and many others. Its high in starch.
I will say nice write up. Also i am in no way bashing popcorn i have fought for popcorn use in the past very strongly. If it wasnt for popcorn i wouldnt be doing what i do today.

The only way i've put WBS to work is by mixing it 50/50 with pf tek mix. I got pretty good results with it !

You mean you ground it to a flour or just put the WBS in whole? Cause i've done the WBS flour in pf tek before also worked out very nice.
As for in grain jars I've never had luck with WBS. Personally i use rye in all my grain jars. But its all about finding out what works and then experimenting on the side to see if you can improve.

Yep whole WBS mixed in to pf mix. I never had any luck with it either, very messy and if you don't rince it properly you get that sludge shit at the bottom of your jars.

Looks good. What I used to do before I got went all rye.
Only criticism is use a glovebox and your spore syringes don't need to be so dark. Lighter is better. You won't have as many strains trying to compete over a small substrate.

This works, but I've got a better prep.
I dump corn into my PC without the rack. Cover it with a few inches of water then PC at 15 PSI for 30 minutes. As soon as it comes back to atmospheric pressure, I dump it into a colander to drain, then put it on a bath towel till it's room temp. Then just jar it up at PC at 15 PSI for 90 minutes. Easy as pie, and you don't have to watch or test for when your grain is done.

Funny that we all have our methods, huh? If anything, these teks aren't meant to be necessarily followed to a T, but to show differing methods and improve upon them.
Personally I like to use WBS, but I don't even soak, strain, or simmer. I just load about 1 cup of WBS into each jar, followed by a 1/2 cup of water, then PC that for 90 mins at 15 PSI. Works like a charm.
I'm sure it'd work for corn as well. You just gotta experiment.

I love corn man.. this is an old corn pic of mine, as well as the bowl in my signature. after about three flushes, i dumped them in the yard on top of some cardboard and burried em.. about a week later got four HUGE mushrooms, the wet weight was like 320g.. made some tea to share with good friends and thought i lost my balls in the grass in my back yard. peace
p.s. outdoor cultivated shrooms will kick ur ass so be careful (this is just cased corn.. the signature pic is corn and coir.)

Really going to tray this just used to wbs was always afraid of popcorn/corn because of people saying its hard to get the moisture content to field capacity, someone told me to remove the corn in my wbs because its to hard for the mycelium or rather it takes to long for the mycelium to colonize it my question is ...what is colonization time on a normal 1 quart corn/popcorn?

I am working on this atm, and have just finished the boiling / hydrating of the kernels. This is probably stupidly obvious to most, but keep in mind that they will swell up considerably with water uptake. I started with 2 - 2 lbs bags to do 4 - 1.5 cup jars, and it seemed like "just enough".. After hydrating I could probably do 8 jars easily
Just a note for those that don't think ahead like myself....

I am interested in trying this method, but I was wondering if it is possible using only a spore print with no syringe. I don't really want to get into using agar at this point, and the vendor I used only had prints and not syringes. I would be willing to risk some chance of contamination to avoid having to build a glove box and all that. The vendor mentioned something about using a Q-tip to transfer the spores directly to grain and I was just curious about exactly how I might go about that. Thanks!

Dude, make yourself a Still Air Box (SAB) it will cost you less than $10.00 at walmart for a clear storage tote and then you cut holes for your arms, cheap and simple and it ups your odd of getting good results many times over. You could use a q-tip but you better make sure it is sterile or you are going to have problems. Go to tractor supply and get yourself a syringe and a needle and make a spore syringe and so it right. All this cutting corners is going to do is waste your time and money. Do it right or dont do it at all.

Bookmarked, easy to follow and nicely written up, also all the positive replies help. Hopefully I will be able to get my pressure cooker within the next couple of days so I can make a start on this.

I decided to give it a try with two quart jars and they seemed to go a little slower than his and didnt really look like it was all that nice looking mycelium. One jar wouldnt finish colonizing so I decided to see how they smelled and they were fine. (I have to say that this was nocced up with the same LC that I had problems with on all of the WBS jars that I did in the same run) I spawned them to coir/verm/gypsum and my tub is looking amazing after only 6 days. I think I just over boiled some WBS so I may be doing popcorn today instead of WBS I am pleased with its results so far.

I do like this tek and popcorn too. I did find that it does take much longer than 15 minutes of boiling to properly cook the corn but other than that, I am liking this. I do like the picture showing the cross section of the grains to show when its ready. That is very helpful. I just bought 26 pounds of popcorn last week. You should have seen the ladies face at wal mart when I went thru the line with all of that popcorn and a case of quart jars

I use polyfill only... I shake that jars and the kernels touch the polyfill all the time when I shake and I never get contams... if everything was PC'd properly you're fine.

Make sure you hydrate the kernels MORE then what is shown in the tek... the kernels should be hydrated until they crack, all of them... and PC for 90 minutes.

Butt-Head, How do you measure out how much popcorn to use before simmering it? Do you use your quart jar and fill it 1/2 or 3/4 full then poor 12 times (for 12 quart jars)? Please explain, Thanks.

Popcorn is colonizing nicely after a grain to grain transfer from rye. Note that I did have to simmer the popcorn for over an hour to get them soft enough (with no pre-soak). Humidified my house very nicely from all the evaporating water Will post back.

Harvested >5.0 dry oz from the popcorn tub on first flush. Not bad. Popcorn colonized faster than rye after G2G from MS source jar. We'll see what the rye yield looks like from the same syringe soon.
Tub was 5 qts popcorn, 1 qt coffee, coir block, 1 qt verm, 1/2 cup gypsum, 16 gal monotub, 4.5 qts water.

I did 10 jars of corn along with about 15 WBS. I got slower colonizing rates with the popcorn by about 2 days, in identical incubation settings, to reach 100% (even though it was slower, full colonization was considerably fast, at 80F, from liquid culture, wbs/corn - 15/17 days). The casings were prepared identical and the ones with WBS have about 3x the pins while the popcorn has slightly larger pins, but much more spaced out.
possible reason for variation could be that the clone came from a WBS casing, and so it is more suited to that media

Please don't refer to bulk substrates as "casings". It only confuses people as to what a casing layer is.

fair enough! noob mistake
in fact it is that mistake that got me messed up for bulks for the better part of the last year. only recently after reading RR's "Notes" books did i start to understand the concept of making a nutritious bulk, and a mold hostile high PH casing layer on top.

I don't know. I have never tried. I am still relatively new at this.
I have the eight jars I did with Penis Envy that will hopefully fruit by the beginning of the month. I am also working with B+, A+ Albino, and I am fruiting some B+ and A+ Albino right now. That's about it.

This true but its only cause popcorn has much less surface area then rye. So there is actually less mycellium per popcorn jar then there is in a rye jar.

I like the way the OP PC'd them jars with no tin foil, like a boss! Guess he's not worried about the moisture raining down on top of the jars, and soaking into the jars.

The foil you use on jars in the PC is reusable. It takes me 7 pieces of foil to do 100 jars if I want it to.

So do I. Be more careful with it.
Not using foil is a bad idea. I use SFD's and still use foil.

I find polyfil to be VERY breathable. When the climate is dry, especially in the winter, jars will dry out nicely after they cool.

Polyfill is obviously not your only option for lid setup. You could still do this same tek with SFD's or Tvyek. Never been a fan of polyfill lids.

I agree. Polyfil is only what I use. You can set up your lids any way you see fit.

Trying this tek today. I did take me a lot more then 15+ minutes to get my popcorn look like the one on your pictures. A matter a fact more like two hours of boiling. I'll see if it will works hope so anyway.

If I pc the popcorn tonight, could the moister content be the same if I was to leave in the pc for bout 18 hrs? I have to work in the morning, and I dont have much time to deal with it in than until after work and im trying to get a move on.

I just tried this tek, so far did a p2g with my pf cakes I had going nd transferred to the popcorn. Only thing im woundering is should I have watered the popcorns after I boiled nd shit to get rid of starch if there is any? How long before I should start seeing progress? Thanks everyone, ill post my progress as it occurs.
I have a half filled one almost colonized what should i do with it while the other ones catch up? Let it chill or if i did a bottle tek is that a waste?

Don't do that. If you rinse the kernels after they've been boiling they'll cool off and it'll take longer to dry. The popcorn I've used has always been really clean, no rinsing at all needed. Even if the grains break open during the boil the starch will have already gelatinized from the heat so it doesn't just spill out.

would love to see some pics of your jars, but i used popcorn too, and the mycelium not looking so white is okay, popcorn takes a bit longer to colonize from what ive heard. If it looks light white a bit cloudyish just leave them be, they will thicken up soon.
Ive been working with popcorn for my first grow, feel free to check it out n see how my jars looked at 100%.

yea they look similar too mine, just give them a nice shake once at 30% then they thicken up a little more n ull see it alot more dense white mycelium. Ill be tuning in, i wanna see others do well with popcorn!

Hi all this is my first post in this forum.
Im a noob to all this. But ive been reading alot...
Ive even dreamt of growing mushrooms the past days.
And I have also planned my setup alot... My biggest problem is that have to keep my new hobby secret, and I have to do all the steps in the process in stealthmode.
So... First i was thinking of brf cakes because it is the recomended tek for newbies.
But for me and in my situation it would be easiest to go straight to bulk. So now my plan is to use this tek and then use a monotube with verm and coir.
So my question is this a possible way to do it? I got all the stuff and tools i need and have spores of cambodian cubensis.
I think this tek seems perfect for me.
Thank you Cheers from sweden

Why do you have to keep it secret?
Cakes are a good and simple way of getting your tek down and to practice sterile technique. Doing bulk is less forgiving.
If you're king noob try pf tek first.

Yeah everyone says that cakes is the easiest way to do it for beginners.
But for what it seems to me is that cakes takes more effort and caring when it comes to fruiting.
My thinking is with a monotube and polyfill etc. It will be a easier process with less effort and where im going to have the fruiting chamber placed, The surrounding air will be super dry. So with for example brf cakes in a shotgun chamber i would have to spray it all the time to keep the humidity up.
And i dont have to use perlite with is quite expensive around here.
Ive also built my own glove box and have gotten me all kinds of sterilizers, alcohol, alcohol lamp etc.. For me it seems less expensive if i dont succeed with this kind of tek .
But for what i understand, say that im sucessfully do this popcorn tek , can use the verm and coir tek ? To mix the substrate up in a monotube yes?
Edit **
What the hell.. I'll do both...

AGREED Doing bulk is less forgiving.
DISSAGREE
Bulk can be just as easy, this hobby is not hard, Just find a good tek, follow it through and practice good sterile technique and your fine. No one is 100% sterile, there are always contams, they even hitch hike on spores made in the cleanest conditions so the name of the game really is to be clean enough the myc has enough time to colonize before contams set in. Be clean, be percise and dont incubate at high temps. Those 3 will help you along alot.

Thanks for the advise
My biggest problem is the logistics.
Its not optimal where I have to put my fruiting chamber. Its a bit cold and very dry air. Thats why im thinking that a shotgun chamber would dry out very fast. But i think a monotube would do the trick.
A little confused about your messure system quarts , oz, etc.. hehe.. Have to google all the messurements and convert it..
My plan is to use this tek and The use this coir tek -----> https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595/fpart/3/vc/1#11916595
With a another monotube tek.
In that way i can save all the perlite ive bought... I have 16 jars that i can experiment with.
But this tek along the coir tek seems to be the easiest to me.

Lots of kids try growing muchrooms at their parents houses and thats just not cool. They usually get caught and that reflects badly on us.
I try to weed em out!!!

I would recommend skipping the popcorn and getting some bird seed or rye, if you insist on starting with bulk.
I also think you should start with pf tek. You don't have to use the shotgun chamber, instead you can crumble your cakes and spawn them to coir and verm in a "monotub". Spores can be dirty depending on the source, and pf tek is more likely to give you a successful grow then popcorn or grain will with spores. At least if you get a good grow with pf tek, you can clone a fruit. Then you're off to the races.
Most people who do bulk are using agar. get to know it, it will be your best friend. Before agar, headaches, after agar, finding extra storage headaches.

Ok thanks for the advise. I got my spores from the hawk, I hope the spores will be ok. I will get back with pics.
im not a child
I just have this nerdy guy living inside me. When I get a new hobby, like this one I want to know and learn everything. I get a bit excited. But i dont have anyone to share this new hobby with. Except one close friend. And I intend to keep it that way.
I dont know.. But Its kinda spiritual for me.
