Can a jar be 100% colonized with no smell, and still be contaminated?
    #17004208 - 10/10/12 09:52 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Cant really find any info regarding fully colonized jars and bacteria contamination. If a jar is totally colonized and smells good is there still a possibility that its contaminated? Would there be any risk if such a jar was spawned anyway? Does anyone know? I think I saw a post by RR saying that if there was a small amount of bacteria in a jar it would still be ok to spawn, because the good bacteria left over from the pasteurization would take care of it, but I cant find it. Anyone know.

It sounds like you are worrying about possibilities.  Hear no evil, see no evil, smell no evil....Therefore there is no evil (or contamination).

There might be contamination on the inside of the cake.  But no one can prevent what can't be seen.

I wouldn't worry about it. If it's 100% and looks good, I'd say you're in the clear. A picture of the jar would also be good so we can confirm it. I'm sure that would really put any/all fears to rest.

usually if the mycelium has fully colonized a jar it is strong enough to fight off contamination. do you see funky colors or something?

No funky colors, but I had a bunch of other jars with wet spot, and these ones look a little moist to my eye. Shook them the other day and got a nice shroom smell.
Here's a couple pics of one before I shook it.

I guess I'm probably just being paranoid

As long as there is no smell(or only a very very faint smell) of apple, feet, etc then I say use it.

I've had good success with using spawn jars that have fully colonized, but had bacteria present during colonization.

I'd guess an increased risk in contamination to your bulk may b present.

I know that this topic is a bit old, but i am wondering if someone could give some advice.

It's my first time growing mushies with pf tek.
i got a jar that has been sitting in roomtemp. after full colonization for 5 days and some small knots are forming. These are probably pins but they are all turning yellowish.

some pictures:

I should mention that a part of the mycelium was a little yellowish when it was colonizing.

I hope it's normal, but i was wondering what other people with experience think about it.

Thanks in advance!
