Should I be concerned?

I have a kit that uses straw, and have never grown on this substrate before, so I'm a little concerned. It has been about three weeks now since I started growth and mycellium seemed to be growing. However, growth has stopped. The mycellium seems really fluffy and all mycellium I've ever dealt with seemed to be a little more spongy and dense. Could it be that this white stuff is actually a contam? If not, how do I get the mycellium to continue growing? I know I have to be patient, but any timelines I've read say total colonization should have occurred a long time ago. Any help would be appreciated

well the is a contam that is what and stringy "cob web" contam but it is mainly striny not fluffy so if it is fully i would say it is just mycelium i know i had one of those kits before and when it is on the straw it is really really fluffy so that it can jump from straw to straw from what it sounds like i wouldn't worry.
is it 100% colonized? whats is the temp inside the box? is there any light getting in? is there enough mosture in the box?

Cobweb is different from mycelium in a few ways:
1. It is usually a random growth, spreading all over in different directions. It also grows over its self looking like an actual cobweb (ratty looking spiderweb). Mycelium usually has a directional growth, spreading from a central point (spawn or spore germination). 2. Cobweb is not as thick as mycelium, you can typically see through it easily to the substrate layer. It never really grows thick except when it "layers over" as stated in #1. 3. Generally it is not as bright of a white as mycelium is, but I have noticed it is more white than grey as sometimes described. 4. When old it will produce black spores on top of the whispy threads of mold. This generally doesnt show up unless the mold has been there for awhile. This may not happen all the time, as I have seen it only once on a neglected casing that was placed in my garage.

Yeah. If the mycelium is white and has that "blast pattern" look it's prolly not a contam, from what I've seen.

Thanks folks, I really appreciate it....I am concerned still though. It doesn't have that "growth from one spot" like mycellium and it is pretty clear. I am not a huge fan of kits either, but all my stuff is back at home, thousands of miles away and I didn't want to reinvest in all the stuff again just to have to get rid of it. To answer a few questions, it has been in the dark the whole time around 80 degrees. I soaked the straw like I was supposed to. Any ideas? Thanks again!

I have a few ideas to consider, hopefully you guys can tell me what you think. First of all, I was told to keep the container sealed until it was totally colonized. However, it has been over three weeks and I think a little bit of fanning would help to recirculate the air. Also, could the straw be getting a little dry? Maybe that is the problem too. I'm casing the straw too, so maybe I should add the soil despite it not being fully colonized and try fruiting. Are these good or bad ideas? Thanks again

My friend would poke a few holes in the lid to allow limited air exchange. Straw does tend to dry out so it is important to leave the lid on.
He does not recommend casing uncolonized substrate.
