Nicotiana rustica, what about harvesting?
    #1696406 - 07/08/03 01:07 PM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Hi everyone,
I've noticed some interest in tobacco here, so it may be a good place to post my question.
I have some Nicotiana rustica plants, I've planted them the 3 of March and the bigger part of them is flowering/fruiting.
I'd like to receive some informations about how and when to harvest leaves.
Thank you everybody,
Bye,
k.

Allowing tobacco to flower diminishes leaf size and thickness. When flower buds appear they should be picked off. You could allow one or two of them to flower though as they are very pretty.

Tobacco curing is left up to the experts, and it also reduces alkaloid content enormously. "For hallucinogenic purposes, the leaves should be dried quickly, preferebly in the shade or indoors, and withiout the application of heat. Uncured tobacco is very potent- the Indians who used it would often pass out after as little as one cigarette, and 'communicate with the gods.' This type of tobacco should be somked with caution. The danger here is death from overdose rather than addiction. When used as a ritual narcotic it is not smoked often enough to result in addiction." [pg 65] (Grubber, Hudson. Growing the Hallucinogens, 20th Century Alchemist: Berkeley, California. 1991)
