is it beneficial or harmful or irrelevant to dunk with water mixed with hydrogen peroxide? it would kill contams, but would it hurt the cake?

It may irritate the cake a little, but if you do it in a properly sane concentration it shouldn't cause real damage.

whenever I have dunked cakes before i have always used a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide and have never had any problems from it. the hydrogen peroxide only makes up 3% of the total solution

My friend has never had a reason to dunk a cake in peroxide, but he routinely soaks colonized agar wedges and tissue samples in a 3% peroxide solution before transfering to new agar plates.

A peroxide dunk for your cakes should be fine.
